School
As a child, he began playing basketball at the North Kipling Community Centre, the Rexdale Community Hub, and a nearby parking lot. He also attended camps in the neighborhood hosted by former Toronto Raptor DeMar DeRozan.
Banton reclassified from the 2019 class to the 2018 class. He attended Redemption Christian Academy in Northfield, MA, and MacDuffie School in Granby, MA.
By the end of his high school career, Banton had earned a four-star recruit rating. On November 14, 2017, Banton selected Western Kentucky over Kansas State, UMass, and Minnesota.
College
As a freshman, Banton appeared in 31 games for Western Kentucky, averaging 3.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. Banton made 12 starts and nearly had a triple-double with 13 rebounds, 10 assists, and 8 points in a career-high 38 minutes against No. 15 Wisconsin. Banton announced his intention to leave Western Kentucky on April 10, 2019. On May 1, Banton announced his commitment to Nebraska via Twitter. Banton sat out the 2019-20 season after transferring from Western Kentucky to bolster his scout team abilities. Banton was a member of the Huskers’ 4-0 trip to Italy in August 2019, averaging 5.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
On December 17, 2020 he announced his intention to enter the 2021 NBA Draft while keeping his college eligibility. On July 2 however, he declared he will remain in the draft.
Professional career
The Toronto Raptors selected Banton with the 46th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, making him the team’s first Canadian selection. On August 14, he agreed to terms with the Raptors on a multi-year contract. Banton chose the number 45 in honor of the TTC 45 Kipling bus, which frequently ran through the neighborhood where he grew up.
On October 20, 2021, he made his professional debut for the Toronto Raptors against the Washington Wizards in their season and home opener. He scored his first points in the NBA with a buzzer-beating three-point field goal at the end of the third quarter.
