Crystal Palace Opinion: Why the Eagles should sign Joe Lolley this summer?

Back in December 2018, a report from the Daily Mail claimed Crystal Palace were interested in Nottingham Forest star Joe Lolley. However, a move didn’t materialise in the January transfer window.

Joe Lolley, 26, has enjoyed a fantastic season in the Championship, scoring 11 goals and supplying as many assists in 46 games. Although, Nottingham Forest have failed to qualify for the play-offs, the winger’s displays have caught the attention of a number of clubs.

Along with Crystal Palace, West Brom and Watford are also keeping tabs on Lolley for some time now, adds the report. However, Palace must do everything possible to sign the 26-year-old forward in the summer transfer window.

Palace are safe for another season in the top flight, but they’ll find it difficult to negotiate next time around if Roy Hodgson doesn’t buy smart over the summer. The Eagles need prolific goalscorers in their ranks, as they have depended heavily on Luka Milivojevic and Wilfried Zaha this season.

The matter of fact is midfielder Milivojevic being the club’s top scorer with 12 goals tells one how badly Hodgson needs a reliable goalscorer next campaign. Thus, seeking a move for Joe Lolley will only help the south Londoners.

The 26-year-old has impressed in Forest colours in the Championship and while Premier League football is a different beast altogether, he has the potential to make the step up with much concern.

Lolley is the kind of player that Palace needs. It’s a move that Hodgson should make, especially given the lack of firepower in the team. The 26-year-old’s ability on and off the ball is easily better than Jeffrey Schlupp. He has the innate talent to consistently move the ball around and keep the defenders on their toes is something that the Eagles need.

The Redditch-born star certainly fits the profile that Palace require in order to move forward. Alongside Zaha, Townsend and an effective striker, the Eagles can wreak havoc upon teams. Given his age, Lolley would also represent a great investment. His all-round creative ability, dribbling skills and eye for goal will be a boost for Hodgson’s men.

Verdict

Palace need to make the most use of the summer transfer window if they are to challenge for a top 10 finish in the 2019/20 campaign. And a player like Lolley, who has had a stunning campaign in the Championship, could be worth the gamble for Roy Hodgson’s side.
