Crystal Palace Opinion: Eagles should try to strike a deal for Timothy Weah this summer

According to claims from French outlet RMC Sport, Crystal Palace are interested in signing PSG starlet Timothy Weah on loan for the next season.

Weah, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Celtic, announced his exit from Parkhead on Friday but it is expected that the 19-year-old will be loan listed by PSG once again this summer, RMC Sport understands.

The Scottish Sun claims that the highly-rated teenager has left the door open to a Celtic return this summer, while Ligue 1 side Rennes are also keen on securing the services of the prodigy.

Weah made his senior debut for PSG last year but lack of regular first-team opportunities at the French capital saw him go out on loan to Celtic back in January. The 19-year-old enjoyed a fruitful loan spell with the Scottish champions, contributing with 4 goals and an assist from 17 appearances in all competitions.

Son of former Ballon d’Or-winner George Weah, the United States international is regarded as one of the hottest young prospects in world football to be born in the 2000s.

A technically-gifted and versatile attacker, Weah is capable of operating on either side of the attack and also as the leader of the line in a centre-forward role.

Noted for his lightning pace, incredible acceleration, flair and trickery on the ball and wonderful eye for goal, Weah not only excels with ability to create space down the flanks but he is an accurate crosser as well.

Blessed with remarkable speed of thought, drive, determination, agility and athleticism, the youngster has a penchant for producing key passes in the final third and can also terrorise defenders with his ability to cut inside.

A powerful shooter from outside the box, Weah is an aggressive player by nature who often plays with a lot of conviction and sets his team on the front foot. To add to that, he is very much capable of outsmarting defenders with his subtle movement inside the penalty area.

To put things into perspective, Weah is undoubtedly an incredible talent and has shown glimpses of his potential at the highest level.

Playing in a highly competitive league such as the Premier League won’t be easy for him so early in his career, but given his potential, one would expect him to make some kind of an impact in English football should Palace manage to strike a deal for him this summer.

Palace are only weighing up a loan deal for the talented youngster, meaning that it won’t be much of a gamble for the Eagles and it won’t come back to haunt them if Weah fails to deliver the goods.

But again, Weah is amongst the best emerging talents in world football and we have seen 19-year-olds make a positive impact in the Premier League, so it would be harsh to write him off.

The south Londoners should prioritise the permanent signing of Chelsea loanee Mitchy Batshuayi after the Belgian’s flurry of goals over the last couple of months. However, Palace can certainly accommodate a talented youngster like Timothy Weah in their ranks.

One would hardly expect him to start every game in the presence of Andros Townsend and Wilfred Zaha (should he stay at Selhurst Park) but the 19-year-old can add that little bit more to their attack next season.

Hodgson should look at Weah as an off-the-bench impact player, as the youngster has the pace and guile in his armoury to provide that X-factor to an attack that has looked pretty listless at times in the Premier League this season.

Having said that, Palace should look to try and beat off competition for the talented 19-year-old this summer and lure him to south London.
