Crystal Palace Opinion: Why the Eagles should go all out for Jonjoe Kenny?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Crystal Palace and Burnley are interested in Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny.

The 22-year-old played second fiddle behind Seamus Coleman last season, making just ten appearances for the Toffees under Marco Silva, who is keen to add a right-back this summer. That could see Everton allow Jonjoe Kenny to leave in search of first-team football.

That being said, Crystal Palace must beat Burnley to Kenny’s signature this summer.

The Eagles had a very inconsistent 2018/19 campaign as they finished 12th in the table. Roy Hodgson must bring in new players this summer if Palace are to challenge for a top-half finish next term. Not only signing new players should the club’s aim but also retaining the core of the team.

The likes of Wilfried Zaha, Luka Milivojevic, Andros Townsend and Aaron Wan-Bissaka impressed this past season, which means they are likely to receive offers this summer from bigger clubs. Young Aaron Wan-Bissaka has had an excellent campaign, with the 21-year-old showing his astute defensive nature and ability to cut out opposition’s attacks with ease.

That has seen the England youth international already attract interest from Manchester United, who are planning a squad rebuild under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and are capable of attracting top quality players, even though they haven’t realistically challenged for the title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Should Solskjaer’s United sign Wan-Bissaka, Hodgson should replace him with Jonjoe Kenny.

Kenny is a highly-rated full-back, who didn’t get enough opportunities to showcase his talent at Goodison Park this past campaign.

The right-back is behind Coleman in the pecking order under Marco Silva and at 22, he cannot afford to waste time by warming the benches. He must leave Everton for his betterment this summer and join hands with Hodgson at Palace.

In Kenny, Hodgson would get an attack-minded, explosive right-back, who loves bombing up and down the right flank. The England youth international has bundles of energy and is excellent on the overlap, keeping the opposition defenders always on their toes.

He can cross the ball well and is a good reader of the game as well; however, the 22-year-old needs to be more solid defensively if he is to excel at the highest level. But Kenny is very young and has lot of time to improve his game.

Verdict

Kenny definitely needs to play regular football and it seems unlikely he will do that at Everton. A loan move would be best for all parties and keeping that in mind, Palace must go for him this summer.
