Man City letting go of their £45m signing amidst Bundesliga interest would be bad decision making

Why Manchester City should not let go of talented winger Leroy Sane

According to Sky Sports, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are still determined to sign Manchester City winger Leroy Sane.

The 24-year-old Sane, whose career at the Etihad had been hampered due to injuries, has been linked with the Bavarians since last summer. Sane, who joined City in 2016 from Schalke for a sum of £45million has never quite been able to establish himself in Pep Guardiola’s side.

The German has failed to live up to the expectation and has spent the majority of his time in England on the sidelines owing to injuries. Sane has been injured as many as six times since arriving at the Etihad, raising serious concerns about his fitness.

After impressing in City’s domestic treble-winning campaign last year with 16 goals and 18 assists to his name, Sane was looking to establish his spot as a first-team regular this season.

However, tragedy struck once again as he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture during City’s Community Shield match against Liverpool, ruling him out for the rest of the season. Sane has since then spent time on the fringes and is yet to make an appearance this term.

Sane can offer depth in the attack for City

With the summer transfer market around the corner, Bayern are now once again back in the hunt for Sane.

Having scored 39 goals and given 45 assists during his time in Manchester, there is no questioning the youngster’s talent. Apart from this injury-hit season and his debut year in 2016-17, the German has managed to score at least 10 goals and give as many assists in the league.

Having proven his credentials whenever offered a chance, Sane still remains one of City’s top talents, forcing the club hierarchy to keep hold of him. Primarily a left-winger, Sane is also capable of playing anywhere in the attack, be it left or right. Also, City lack depth in that role, with Raheem Sterling being the only other recognised face.

Though Sterling has been one of City’s top-performers in recent times, Sane when fit could give the Englishman a run for his money, having proved it in the past. Hence, City should keep some more faith in him and keep him at the Etihad as he still has a lot of football left in him.

Verdict

Despite missing the major share of this season due to injury, Sane’s performances in the past reveal that he is a true talent. Letting him go amidst interest from Germany at this point seems like a foolish idea as the side clearly lack depth in that role. Also, selling him would force City to search for a replacement, which would be a waste of time.
