Duarte was born and raised in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. He moved with his family to New York and played his final two years of high school basketball at Redemption Christian Academy in Troy, New York.
Duarte then started his college career at Northwest Florida State College. As a college freshman, Duarte averaged 12.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and two steals in 23.3 minutes per game.
As a sophomore, Duarte averaged 19 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Subsequently, he was named NABC NJCAA Player of the Year and was a first-team NJCAA Division I All-American. Both the media and the coaches’ votes also named Duarte Panhandle Player of the Year.
Duarte then transferred to the University of Oregon to continue his college career. In his junior season, Duarte averaged 12.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game. During the 2020–21 season, Duarte led Oregon Ducks to an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament.
On March 29, 2021, he declared for the 2021 NBA draft. He was selected thirteenth overall by the Indiana Pacers in the Round 1 of the 2021 NBA Draft.
