Why Chelsea should sign Timo Werner ahead of Moussa Dembele
Chelsea are targeting Red Bull Leipzig striker Timo Werner and Lyon forward Moussa Dembele in the January transfer window, as per The Guardian (h/t The Metro).
The Blues were unable to replace their star man Eden Hazard last summer after he left for Real Madrid. A striker remains Frank Lampard’s priority, with Olivier Giroud far down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge. Michy Batshuayi has appeared off the bench in recent weeks but he hasn’t done much to impress.
Werner, meanwhile, has been flourishing under Julian Nagelsmann in the Bundesliga this season. In 14 league games this season, the German striker has smashed 15 goals and teed up 5 more. He has also scored 3 goals in the Champions League.
Tammy Abraham has single-handedly carried Chelsea’s attack so far but Lampard must sign a backup option.
Dembele, on the other hand, has scored 23 Ligue 1 goals in 44 appearances since joining Lyon in August 2018. In fact, he has become one of the most exciting players to watch in the French league since his move from Scottish Champions Celtic.
He is more settled under new manager Rudi Garcia than Sylvinho and Lyon might allow him to leave if their £85million valuation is met.
Chelsea have started the new season in fine fashion but they do need to add something to their squad in the coming windows, especially a new defender and striker.
And with the £150million that Lampard is expected to get in the January window, it could be a very exciting transfer window for Chelsea fans.
Verdict
Tammy Abraham is having the season of his life under Lampard this season. But like many others, he might be a one-season-wonder. Dembele has been good for Lyon, forming a formidable partnership with Memphis Depay.
Timo Werner has been Leipzig’s standout player for the past couple of seasons and has shown that he can perform on the big stage. While Dembele has been reliable, the German striker would be a more ideal signing for the Blues.
