Chelsea Opinion: Why Lautaro Martinez will be a good fit for the Blues?

According to Argentine news outlet RACING de ALMA, Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in signing Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez in the summer transfer window.

Lautaro Martinez, 21, has shown a lot of promise in his debut season with Inter, netting nine goals in all competitions. The forward has also forced his way into the Argentina international set-up.

The report claims any interested party will have to cough up €60m to prise him away from Inter. Inter, however, have no intention of allowing Lautaro Martinez to leave at the end of the season.

Chelsea certainly are in need of a new striker and thus, they should beat Manchester City to the signature of Lautaro Martinez in the summer.

The Blues have been handed a two-window transfer ban, though they are still waiting for the final verdict of their appeal. They have continued to monitor potential targets ahead of the summer transfer window and Martinez, as it appears, is one of them.

To put things into perspective, the addition of Martinez would do Chelsea a world of good and solve their No.9 woes. Maurizio Sarri’s side lack a prolific goalscorer in their ranks and the Argentina international’s arrival at the Stamford Bridge would help them improve massively in the final third.

Sarri signed Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus in January but after bright start to life in south London, the 31-year-old has gone off the boil. Olivier Giroud has starred in the Blues’ Europa League campaign but the Italian tactician has shown very little faith in the Frenchman to lead his team’s attack.

With Higuain and Giroud proving insufficient, signing Martinez in the summer if the transfer ban is lifted would take Chelsea to a completely different level.

Martinez is considered as one of the exciting prospects to emerge out of South American football. He has scored nine goals in 30 games in his debut campaign in Italian football, while impressing with his work-rate and ability to lead the line impressively in the absence of star man Mauro Icardi.

Standing at 5ft 9in, the 21-year-old excels with his movement and ball control, while also possessing the poaching instincts and awareness of a traditional centre-forward. He often drops deeper to link up play and not only has the ability to lose his marker inside the box but he is also good at holding the ball up with his back to the goal.

Martinez also combines his lightning pace with his spellbinding dribbling skills to embark on exciting runs through the opposition’s defence. The Argentina international is adept at changing directions quickly with the ball at his feet and often changes gears in the blink of an eye to leave the defenders for dead.

Verdict

If Chelsea do manage to get their hands on Martinez, they should look at him as a long-term investment. He has a huge potential to fulfill and has the required elements in his game to light up the Premier League, week in and week out.
