Why Chelsea should make a move for Callum Wilson in the summer

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea had cooled their interest in Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson earlier this month.

Callum Wilson, 27, joined Bournemouth from Coventry City back in in 2014. However, the English striker has been in poor form for the Cherries and has only managed six goals in all competitions since the start of the season.

Despite the transfer ban being lifted, it’s surprising to see Chelsea haven’t signed any new players during this transfer window. The Blues have performed well under Frank Lampard this season and are currently placed 4th in the league. However, it must be noted that they are heavily reliant on young striker Tammy Abraham for goals.

Abraham, 22, has enjoyed a fine breakthrough season with the Blues so far, bagging 13 goals in 23 league games. He has become a crucial part of Lampard’s side, leading the youthful revolution at the club this season with 15 goals and six assists in just 32 games across all competitions.

Other than Abraham, Lampard has only two No.9 options in Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi. But with Giroud out of contract at the end of the season and Michy Batshuayi yet to convince fully of a starting role, Lampard must definitely bring in a striker in the summer to cover and compete with Tammy Abraham. To that end, Callum Wilson would be a smart fit for the Blues if they sign him in the summer by reviving their interest.

Wilson is among the exciting strikers in the Premier League due to his consistent performances for Bournemouth over the last couple of seasons. He bagged 14 goals and 10 assists in 30 league appearances last season, bettering his 2017/18 campaign’s tally of eight goals and two assists in 28 outings.

The 27-year-old’s performances over the last 12-15 months have also seen him become a regular member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Verdict

The Englishman may not have hit the heights of last season at Bournemouth but he’s still a reliable striker who knows where the back of the net is and is proven in the Premier League. All in all, Wilson would be a smart option to compete with Abraham for a place in Lampard’s starting XI next season.
