Why Chelsea should make a move for Lyon striker Moussa Dembele

According to the Athletic, Chelsea are expected to focus on signing Moussa Dembele from Lyon in the summer transfer window after Liverpool stepped up their interest in RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner.

Moussa Dembele, 23, is one of France’s best young talents. He has registered 22 goals and 7 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for Lyon this season. The report adds he will not come cheap, with the striker contracted to Lyon until 2023.

Meanwhile, Chelsea failed to sign players during the January window after seeing their transfer ban lifted. Despite not signing a player over the last two transfer windows and losing Eden Hazard, the Blues’ current position in the top four merits praise for manager Frank Lampard, who replaced Maurizio Sarri last summer.

Chelsea’s attack has performed well this term, with the young Tammy Abraham impressing up front. He has hit the ground running in his first full season at Stamford Bridge, scoring 13 Premier League goals. However, he hasn’t been challenged for a spot in the starting XI.

Lampard needs someone to compete with Abraham, with one of Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi likely to leave in the summer window. (h/t The Metro) With Lampard’s young stars putting in the hard work this season, one must not forget that the current Chelsea squad lacks experience and depth in various areas. Hence, the Blues’ interest in Moussa Dembele is justified.

Dembele has been a prolific goalscorer for Lyon since arriving from Celtic in 2018. He has netted 31 goals in 60 Ligue 1 appearances. Prior to his move to Lyon, the Frenchman scored 51 goals in 94 appearances across all competitions during his three-year spell with Celtic.

Not to forget, the 23-year-old also has previous experience of playing in England with Fulham, where he netted 19 goals in 64 games. Truly, Dembele has established himself as one the most dangerous strikers across Europe and his solid goalscoring record at the highest level speaks volumes of his ability.

The Frenchman is an out-and-out striker who can be helpful for the team. He can be made to partner Abraham up front. And this combination could prove to be lethal as both Abraham and Dembele come with a guarantee of goals.

With Abraham coming to the fore this term, it would be good if Dembele is added to the Chelsea squad too, as it would help in building a successful partnership. All in all, the former Celtic star would bring a lot of quality to Lampard’s attack.

Verdict

Hence, the Blues should look to add firepower to their attacking system by making a move for the 23-year-old Dembele in the summer.
