Chelsea or Tottenham? Where should Mats Hummels go?

The Mirror has reported that Bayern Munich centre-back Mats Hummels has held talks with both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur ahead of a proposed winter move to the Premier League. It was revealed earlier in the year by Bleacher report that the German international wanted to move as he was unhappy at the number of appearances he has made so far this season.

But for Hummels, the question is where should he move? To Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea or to Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham – with both sides challenging for a place in the Premier League’s top four. Even more so, both the managers are aiming to make their sides among the elite ones in the English top tier. To that end, bringing in the 30-year-old would make the job a little easier.

Part of the German World Cup-winning squad back in 2014, Hummels swapped Borussia Dortmund for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2016. He has won two Bundesliga titles since then. Under the new manager, Niko Kovac, the 30-year-old has struggled to make an impact, with only 9 appearances in the Bundesliga with Kovac opting to use Niklas Sule and Jerome Boateng instead.

But despite that, Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed in an interview with AZ that Hummels is going no-where. He went on to say:

“We had a conversation with Mats a few days ago and he will play for Bayern Munich in the second half of the season. He feels very well in Munich, and if a player does not always play, it’s clear that there are discussions. Mats wanted to talk to us. We explained our point of view to him and he explained his point of view.”

However, with Toby Alderweireld’s contract set to expire and Chelsea looking for a more solid defender, both clubs could be a perfect destination for the reliable centre-back.

The question for Hummels to answer is if he wants to win the Premier League title or not. With Tottenham, amid all the issues surrounding the club, there is a small chance that he can do that. It’s the same with Chelsea, as Maurizio Sarri doesn’t have the players he wants at the moment.

With Juventus also in the race for his signature (via Calciomercato), maybe Hummels has a better chance at a Champions League trophy with the Old Lady among the favourites for the coveted European honour.
