Chilwell steals the show: Chelsea player ratings vs Crystal Palace

Chelsea romped home to an emphatic 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Premier League Matchday 4 at Stamford Bridge as Frank Lampard’s side returned to winning ways after crashing out of the Carabao Cup against Tottenham on Wednesday.

The Blues had to stage a remarkable comeback to secure a point in the 3-3 draw against West Brom last week but they had a much more comfortable day at the office against Roy Hodgson’s side. Ben Chilwell opened the scoring on his league debut for Chelsea in the 50th minute following a goalless first-half before setting up Kurt Zouma’s headed goal with a pinpoint cross.

Jorginho slotted home a couple of penalties late in the game to add more gloss to the scoreline, with Chelsea climbing up to 4th in the standings with that result. Here’s how the Blues stars fared against the Eagles:

Chelsea player ratings

Edouard Mendy (6/10)

The Senegalese international had very little to do on his league debut for the Blues, with Palace hardly posing an attacking threat.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6.5/10)

Kept Eberechi Eze at bay with some good defensive work but wasn’t really tested by a rather toothless Palace attack. Booked in the second half for persistent fouling.

Kurt Zouma (7.5/10)

Didn’t have much defending to do but looked calm and composed in possession. Deserves a lot of credit for a well-taken goal with a towering header midway through the second half.

Thiago Silva (7/10)

Much like his teammates at the back, the Brazilian veteran wasn’t really called into action too many times over the course of the ninety minutes. However, he stamped his authority with a tidy display and always looked to put the team on the front foot with some progressive passing.

Jorginho (8.5/10)

Wasn’t tested defensively but moved the ball around with ease and caught the eye with some lovely long passes to switch the play. Scored twice from the penalty spot late in the game.

Ben Chilwell (9/10)

The England international absolutely nailed it on his PL debut for Chelsea. Got into some good attacking positions and deserves all the credit for a fantastic run at the back post for Chelsea’s opener. Showed his quality with his deliveries from set-pieces and capped off an excellent all-round display with a delicious assist for Zouma’s headed goal.

Kai Havertz (7.5/10)

Nothing spectacular from the German playmaker but he showed his class with some slick link-up play in the final third. Won the second penalty that was converted by Jorginho. Also caught the eye with one powerful forward run in the first half.

N’Golo Kante (7/10)

The Frenchman didn’t really contribute a lot to the attack but stamped his authority with a solid energetic display, covering a lot of ground in the process.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (6.5/10)

Lacked enough penetration at times against a Palace backline that looked solid for large quarters of the game. However, he showed good pace and directness down the flanks and produced a really good cross in the second half that should have been converted by Abraham.

Timo Werner (6/10)

The German talisman struggled to get into the game against a Palace backline that sat deep and didn’t allow much space to make runs behind. Doesn’t look all that comfortable playing on the left channel.

Tammy Abraham (6/10)

The England international should have done better with his hold-up play to bring Werner into the mix. His finishing wasn’t all that great either.
