Canadian GP 2022: Red Bull driver Max Verstappen ensured he remained calm in the latter stages of the race to increase his championship lead in Montreal.
Max Verstappen stretched his lead in the 2022 F1 Drivers’ Championship with his first win in Montreal on Sunday. The Red Bull driver kept his cool to keep Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz at bay, after a late safety car, to take the top step on the podium at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
The Dutchman has now won six races this year and holds a 46-point lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings – the largest cushion any driver has enjoyed so far this season. His teammate Sergio Perez, who remained 2nd in the standings, suffered an engine problem and had to retire his car after 9 laps. An engine failure also potentially robbed Haas’ Mick Schumacher of a first F1 points finish as he retired his car a few laps later.
Nevertheless, Carlos Sainz finished in 2nd place for Ferrari and took an extra point for the fastest lap as well while Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton returned to the podium for the first time since the opening race of this year in Bahrain. George Russell managed another impressive 4th place finish ahead of Charles Leclerc, who started at the back of the pack.
