Early life

Santos was raised in Brasilia, where his father had a job as a pilot for Varig. He was born in Limeira, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Santos had never played American football prior to arriving in St. Augustine, Florida, as a 15-year-old exchange student. Santos had initially intended to spend a year at St. Joseph Academy studying English, but he quickly discovered that his Brazilian soccer kicking abilities translated well to American football field goal kicking. Santos stayed in Florida and honed his kicking skills through high school since he had the chance to receive a college scholarship.

College Career

Santos made his Tulane commitment on January 22, 2010. Additionally, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville, and Miami had an interest in Santos. Santos led the Green Wave in points scored his freshman season while playing in all 12 games, making 13 of his 16 field goal attempts, 32 of his 33 PATs, and managing kickoffs. He was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team and was honorable-mention All C-USA. Santos participated in all 13 games during his sophomore campaign and was second on the team in scoring, making 11/18 field goals and 33/34 PATS while handling kickoff and punting duties, with an average punt length of 41 yards.

Santos had a breakout season in 2012, making a school record-setting 57-yard field goal and going 26 of 27 on PATS (his only miss was a blocked shot). He made at least 20 kicks without missing in a season, becoming just the second kicker to do so. 31 of his 55 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks, while 12 of those field goals were made from distances of at least 40 and two from 50 yards. Santos won the Lou Groza Award for the best placekicker in the country at the end of the season and was selected as a unanimous All-American.

Santos continued to play in the 2014 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, where he made one tackle and hit on a 39-yard field goal.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Santos as an undrafted free agent on May 19, 2014. On August 30, 2014, he was named the team’s kicker after defeating seasoned pro, Ryan Succop. He participated in his first NFL regular season game on September 7, 2014, making history as the first player ever born in Brazil. He also made the most field goals (25) by a rookie kicker in Chiefs history (tied with Ryan Succop).

Santos was the team captain and scored 113 points, which was a rookie record for the Chiefs.

The Chicago Bears acquired Santos on November 20, 2017. Santos missed his first field goal attempt as a Bear, a 54-yard attempt. On December 4, Santos was placed on injured reserve after groin straining during pregame warmups in Week 13’s matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. Santos committed to the New York Jets on March 15 of last year, and he was let go on August 22 of that same year. Greg Zuerlein suffered a groin injury on October 2, 2018, and the Los Angeles Rams signed Santos to fill in as their starting kicker while Zuerlein recovered. In his first game, Santos kicked a game-winning field goal of 39 yards to beat the Seattle Seahawks 33-31. He was released on October 16 after two games once Zuerlein was deemed healthy.
