Why Burnley signing Samuel Grandsir would be a good move
According to Get French Football News (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post), AS Monaco winger Samuel Grandsir is exploring ‘other opportunities’ following his loan spell at Stade Brestois.
The 23-year-old Grandsir came through the youth ranks at French club Evreux before moving to the Troyes academy. Having come through the ranks, he went on to make 77 first-team appearances, scoring 6 goals and assisting 9 more. He joined AS Monaco in 2018 and featured 18 times, scoring and assisting one goal each, before joining Strasbourg on loan in January 2019.
Last summer, Grandsir was once again loaned out by Monaco, this time to Stade Brest. He featured 27 times for the club, contributing with 5 goals and a solitary assist.
Goal-shy Burnley need attacking reinforcements
Burnley, meanwhile, have done well to recover from a poor start to the 2019/20 campaign. The Clarets are currently 10th in the league table, and stand a chance to qualify for the Europa League. Despite their rise up the table, Burnley have struggled for goals in the Premier League this term.
Indeed, the Clarets have netted just 34 times in 29 matches so far, with Chris Wood carrying the major goalscoring burden, netting 11 times. Fellow centre-forwards Ashley Barnes and Jay Rodriguez have chipped in with six and five goals respectively.
However, there hasn’t been a lot of contribution from the wide players, which has been an issue for Sean Dyche’s side. Dwight McNeil has shown potential but has scored just two goals. Robbie Brady and Johann Berg Gudmundsson, on the other hand, have netted just once each, whereas Aaron Lennon hasn’t found the back of the net even once.
Furthermore, Lennon is out of contract at the end of the season. This warrants the addition of a new winger to Burnley’s squad. And Grandsir, to that end, would be a viable option. He has had a decent campaign for Stade Brest, bagging five goals, which is more than what the Clarets wingers have managed this season.
The former French U21 international is equally comfortable playing both flanks and at 24, he has his best years ahead of him. His signing would add greater depth to the Burnley attack. It would also provide them with an additional goal threat from the wings.

Verdict
Burnley haven’t been the most prolific team in the Premier League. There hasn’t been enough goal contribution from the wings. And with Lennon’s contract running out, it would serve them well to sign a new wide player. Hence, signing Samuel Grandsir from Monaco would be a good move. The 24-year-old’s arrival would add more bench strength, while also improving the quality of the squad.
