Manchester City player ratings vs Lyon in the Champions League
Manchester City and Lyon played out an edge of the seat thriller on Matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League, with both the teams claiming a point apiece from the 2-2 draw.
The Citizens dominated the possession but Lyon had the better chances to open the scoring in the first half. Memphis Depay missed a relatively easy chance from close range while Maxwel Cornet hit the post.
After a goalless first half, it was Lyon who took the lead in the 55th-minute. Maxwel Cornet latched on to Memphis Depay’s inch-perfect pass and found the net from the edge of the box with a wonderful curling effort.
The visitors soon got back on level terms, Aymeric Laporte heading it in from Raheem Sterling’s free-kick to restore parity.
Lyon kept pushing for the winner and it was Maxwel Cornet once again who put the home side in the lead 81 minutes into the game.
Sergio Aguero headed it in from Riyad Mahrez’s corner to equalise for the second time in the game and the Citizens qualified to the knockout rounds for the 6th consecutive time.

1. Ederson (6/10)
The Brazilian was hardly at fault for either of the goals but was kept on his toes all the time by a potent Lyon attack.
2. Kyle Walker (6/10)
A decent display overall. Contributed a lot to the attack in the second half but was beaten for pace at the back once in the first half
3. John Stones (6.5/10)
Put in a good shift at the back to deal with Lyon’s counter-attacks in the second half.
4. Aymeric Laporte (8/10)
Pulled off a wonderful tackle to deny Maxwel Cornet in the first half and looked solid defensively for large quarters of the game as Lyon continued to threaten; slid in but could not prevent Cornet from scoring the second. Brought his team back on level terms with a wonderful header.
5. Oleksandr Zinchenko (6.5/10)
Did a decent job defensively but was partially to blame for Cornet’s opener as he failed to close him down soon enough. Much more comfortable in the other half and played some intelligent passes.
6. Fernandinho (6/10)
Looked wayward with his positioning in the first half and picked up a yellow card; improved considerably in the second half to get some control over the proceedings in the midfield.
7. David Silva (6/10)
Wasn’t his best display in midfield. Played a good pass in the first half to set Leroy Sane free but lacked his usual impact on the game; improved in the second half and contributed a lot more to the attack.
8. Raheem Sterling (6/10)
Deserves all the credit for setting up Laporte’s headed equaliser with a perfectly weighted free-kick. Did not do much apart from that and wasn’t at ease in an unfamiliar role.
9. Riyad Mahrez (7/10)
The Algerian wasn’t afraid to shoot in the first half but his efforts lacked direction and venom. Got into the game a lot more in the second half and created chances with his crossing and passing from the wide positions. Sent in a perfect corner to set up Aguero for the headed equaliser.
10. Leroy Sane (5/10)
Poor display from the German as he lost possession far too easily. Made his presence known at times with some runs down the left but lacked his usual sharpness; rightly subbed off.
11. Sergio Aguero (6.5/10)
He struggled to get into the game all night but managed to turn a disappointing game on its head with that late equaliser; deserves all the credit for losing his marker.
