Brighton Opinion: Seagulls should beat Burnley to sign Jayden Bogle

According to the Sun, Burnley and Brighton are set to go head to head in a transfer tug of war over Derby County starlet Jayden Bogle in the summer.

The same report claims that Brighton manager Chris Hughton has sent his scouts to keep a close eye on Bogle, who has been a breakout star for Frank Lampard’s side in the Championship this season.

The 18-year-old was only promoted to the senior team prior to the ongoing campaign but he has played a massive role for Derby County on the right-hand side of the backline, playing 31 times in the Championship to keep the Rams in the race for a promotion playoff spot.

Bogle is yet to find the net for the Rams but he has accumulated 4 assists in the Championship this term, whilst his three man-of-the-match awards also highlight his rapid development into a first-team player at Pride Park.

In all honesty, the youngster hasn’t looked like a player who is playing in his first season at the senior level, showing plenty of confidence in his abilities and earning rave reviews for his big-game temperament.

The 18-year-old has been a tireless worker for Derby down the right, patrolling up and down the pitch with his pace and energy and contributing equally to both attack and defence. The Englishman has shown maturity that belies his tender years in terms of decision-making and composure, both of which are very important for an offensive-minded full-back.

Technically sound with a good understanding of the game, Bogle is adept at cutting out the attacks with crucial tackles and interceptions. He also provides impetus to the attack further up the pitch with his pace, dribbling skills and wonderful ball-playing abilities. He has a good eye for a pass and tends to create chances by linking up with his teammates down the wide areas.

Bogle has averaged 2.5 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 1.2 key passes, 1.4 dribbles and 2.6 long balls per game in the Championship this term.

To put things into perspective, Bogle would be a good signing for both Brighton and Burnley, with the Premier League duo in need of cover at right-back. While Burnley can bank on Bogle as a long-term successor to Phil Bardsley, the Seagulls should look at the youngster as a replacement for the 38-year-old Bruno Saltor, who is likely to hang up his boots at the end of the season. However, Chris Hughton can pull of a masterstroke by striking a deal for the talented teenager in the summer.

Brighton have enjoyed a reasonable season in the Premier League this season but they should look to build a solid platform for the future and aim for better things next term. Freshening up the squad with some young players should be the way forward for Hughton and Bogle certainly fits the bill. His arrival would not only help the club cope with Bruno’s departure but provide competition to Martin Montoya as well, ensuring that the Seagulls don’t run out of options at the back.
