Brandon Rios Early career
Brandon Rios had an impressive 230-35 record in amateur boxing and even won the U.S. National Amateur Featherweight title in 2004. He also competed at 125 pounds as a United States Olympic alternate. During a conversation with Garcia, Rios admitted to chuckles that having Roberto work in his corner during the Olympic trials in Mississippi was a big mistake. He acknowledged that his father had been his amateur coach throughout his career, and thus he shouldn’t have made that decision.

Top Rank boxer Ríos, signed to Bob Arum’s company, secured a TKO victory over Manuel Pérez in the 7th round on October 17, 2009. He then competed against Anthony Peterson in a WBA title eliminator, where Ríos was leading on all scorecards before winning via disqualification in the seventh round due to multiple low blows by Peterson. Ríos’s next fight was on the undercard of Margarito vs. Pacquiao. He won by TKO in the fifth round against Omri Lowther, which earned him a shot at WBC Lightweight Champion Humberto Soto, as promised by Bob Arum.
Brandon Rios claimed the WBA Regular Lightweight title by defeating reigning champion Miguel Acosta of Venezuela on February 26th, 2011, via a 10th-round knockout.
