Why Bournemouth should avoid signing Tottenham defender Danny Rose

According to Sky Sports, Bournemouth have enquired about signing Tottenham left-back Danny Rose, along with Watford and Newcastle United. The latter two clubs, however, are more interested in a loan deal while Tottenham prefer either a permanent sale or a loan with an obligation to buy in the summer (h/t Sky Sports).

Danny Rose, 29, has featured in just three of Spurs’ last 14 Premier League matches. He started just one of those, a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The England international will become a free agent in the summer of 2021.

Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga have both started ahead of Rose at left-back in recent weeks. Rose, who has made just 12 Premier League appearances this season, is keen to play in the Euro 2020 and needs regular first-team football to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s squad, the report adds.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth ended their four-game losing run in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Brighton midweek. Yet, the Cherries remain in the relegation zone.

One of the most important areas that Bournemouth must reinforce is the defence. They have looked out of sorts at the back of late, conceding 37 goals in 24 league games so far. However, at left-back, Diego Rico has been consistently playing well and summer signing Lloyd Kelly is also back from injury. Thus, there’s no immediate need for a new left-back in the Bournemouth squad.

Having said that, the Cherries must avoid signing Danny Rose. He has been with Tottenham since the summer of 2007 when he joined from Leeds United. He has played 214 times for Spurs, scoring 10 times and supplying 29 assists.

The 29-year-old has volumes of Premier League experience under his belt but at this point, he would be surplus to requirements at Bournemouth. To put things plainly, Rico has been consistent at left-back and has a viable back-up in Kelly.

Verdict

It’s vital for Howe to use the January transfer window to the fullest as far as improving his squad for the remainder of the campaign is concerned. Having leaked goals at an alarming rate, Bournemouth should add quality to their backline. However, they must stay away from signing Rose.
