Bournemouth Opinion: Why the Cherries should sign Simon Mignolet?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Bournemouth want to sign a new goalkeeper and Liverpool star Simon Mignolet is believed to be among the options under consideration.

The Belgian shot-stopper, 31, has spent most of this season watching on from the sidelines. He has played just two games for Liverpool this season – both of those coming in cup competitions, being a deputy to summer recruit Alisson Becker.

Simon Mignolet has struggled to break into Jurgen Klopp’s plans this season, and as a result, he could be on his way out of Merseyside in the summer. Bournemouth appear to give the 31-year-old a lifeline in the Premier League and should the Cherries put an offer in the table, the Belgium international must consider it without any second thoughts.

The Cherries have had goalkeeping problems this season, with Asmir Begovic enduring a poor campaign between the sticks. The Bosnian’s form has fluctuated throughout the season and after being restored in the starting XI earlier this month, he has again been dropped to the bench for the last three games.

Eddie Howe has trusted Artur Boruc between the sticks due to Begovic’s inconsistency but the Polish goalkeeper has turned 39 earlier this month. Boruc has entered the final stage of his career and is likely to hang up his gloves at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

That makes the signing of a new goalkeeper very much important for Bournemouth and Eddie Howe should make a move for Liverpool outcast, Simon Mignolet.

Mignolet is likely to leave Anfield at the end of the season after playing next to no football for Liverpool. Alisson’s arrival last summer has seriously damaged his game time but the Belgian still has a lot to give at the highest level.

The 31-year-old’s time in Merseyside has been a mixed one, with Mignolet making a series of high-profile errors since joining from Sunderland back in 2013. But on the whole, he remains a quality as well as a highly-experienced goalkeeper, who has made close to 250 appearances in the Premier League.

He is also a vocal leader and a decent organiser of the backline, someone that the Cherries have lacked all this season.

Verdict

An experienced goalkeeper with cat-like reflexes and solid shot-stopping abilities, Mignolet would be a top addition to the Bournemouth defence. He’ll be the perfect player to compete with Begovic for the no.1 spot which in turn will be beneficial for Howe’s team.
