Man United Opinion: Signing Sergio Ramos would only drain United’s finances

According to the Mirror, Man United and Liverpool have made an approach to sign Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid, with reports claiming that the 33-year-old is unsettled at the club.

Mirror understands that Ramos is eyeing an exit from Madrid this summer after enduring a strained relationship with Los Blancos president Florentino Perez.

Ramos was involved in a heated bust-up with Perez in the dressing room following Madrid’s humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Ajax in the Champions League round-of-16 tie. The report adds that Perez slammed the players for their lack of intent on the pitch but the talismanic centre-back made an attempt to defend his teammates. (h/t Mirror)

The same report claims that Serie A champions Juventus are also interested in securing the services of the 33-year-old after having snapped up Cristiano Ronaldo last summer.

Ramos is one of the household names in European football and certainly amongst the best centre-backs in the world. A youth product of Sevilla, the Spaniard made his move to Madrid back in 2005 and has established himself as one of the mainstays of the club’s defence over the course of his illustrious and distinguished career in the La Liga.

The 33-year-old has racked up a mammoth 606 appearances for Real Madrid over the course of 14 years, accumulating 84 goals and 39 assists in the process, stats which are certainly jaw-dropping for a centre-back. There’s hardly any accolade left for him to get his hands on and he has probably won everything that a footballer could dream of.

Ramos’s trophy collection at Madrid includes 4 La Liga titles, 4 Champions League titles, 4 FIFA Club World Cups, 2 Copa del Rey and 3 UEFA Super Cups, and it is beyond doubt that he is one of the most high-profile footballers in the world.

The 33-year-old, who boasts of 163 international caps for Spain under his belt, has also tasted plenty of silverware on the international arena, having won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the Euro Cup in 2008 and 2012. To sum it up, Ramos has won everything but he is still only 33 and has plenty to offer at the highest level.

To put things into perspective, it is a no-brainer that Sergio Ramos would be an incredible addition to any squad in the world and both Liverpool and Man United have every reason to look at him as a potential target in the summer.

While the Reds have a stalwart like Virgil van Dijk in their ranks, United are currently crying out for a world-class centre-back and Ramos would be a massive upgrade on all of the Red Devils’ existing options at the back.

It is true that Ramos could be an instant solution to Man United’s defensive woes next season but the Red Devils need to understand that he is already 33. The Spaniard is at a stage in his career where his powers are going to decline very soon and a younger centre-back like Matthijs de Ligt or Milan Skriniar, or whoever for that matter, would be a better choice for the club.

United need to remember that Ramos, though keen to leave Real Madrid, won’t be available on a free transfer given that the 33-year-old is under contract at Bernabeu until the summer of 2021.

A player of his profile and stature in European football is likely to command a huge transfer fee even at the age of 33 and, one cannot help but feel that United could make better use of those funds by investing in a young talented centre-back.

With Solskjaer at the helm of affairs, United should look to reinstate their age-old policy of transforming talented youngsters into world-beaters, which would allow them to build a strong platform for continued success. Hence, it is clear that the Red Devils need to go through a transitional phase to take a step towards bringing back their glory days.

Traditionally, United have always favoured the policy of ‘building success’ over ‘buying success’. Throwing around millions in the transfer window to bring in ageing world-class stars won’t do any good to the club’s long-term plans and that is exactly why they should drop their interest in the 33-year-old Spaniard.
