God Of War has had a greater impact on video games than any other modern action franchise. God of War inspired many similar games by mixing an epic plot with quick-time events, vicious finishing moves, and insane numbers of combo hits. The worst of them replicated the formula, while the better ones brought a welcome element to it. Some of these games are simply similar to God of War in terms of gameplay, while others borrow heavily from Sony’s franchise series’ ideas, but they all owe a debt of appreciation to Kratos’ drive for vengeance.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is definitely one of the darker and lore-heavy games on our list, taking more than a few pages from 2018’s God of War’s playbook than anything else. The story-heavy approach and the vicious hack-and-slash combat, in addition to the Norse mythology elements, are what really hook us on this game.
Senua’s Sacrifice isn’t your standard button-mashing action game. It’s a surreal event that deals with psychosis, grief, and even beauty. The game’s emphasis on story over slashing has earned it a place on our and many other people’s lists.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider isn’t the best game in the rebooted series, but it is the most ruthless, portraying Lara Croft in a far darker and more vicious light than prior games. The renowned explorer ventures to a tropical rainforest in a race to stop villainous organization Trinity from unleashing an ancient Mayan cataclysm in the action-adventure game produced by Eidos Montréal.
Gone are the days when you could play as an unskilled Lara Croft and try to avoid battle at all costs. Instead, we get a version of Lara who is capable of, if not eager to, killing Trinity’s warriors using a variety of new tools, traps, and weaponry.
Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt
It’s hard to discuss story-driven action RPGs without discussing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a masterpiece. Geralt’s journey had been steadily unfolding throughout the previous two games, and this game brings the witcher’s captivating storyline to a satisfying end.
Even while the main game was already a fantastic experience, CD Projekt Red went above and beyond by releasing two expansion packs that might be called stand-alone games. Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine are without a doubt two of the best DLCs ever published for any game, solidifying The Witcher 3’s status as one of the best games of all time.
Darksiders
Darksiders displays its God of War influence on its sleeve, but it’s the over-the-top comic book graphic style that distinguishes War from Kratos. Although the combinations and combat are identical, we have a special spot for this gloomy fantasy game.

It’s a gory union of gameplay with God of War-inspired combat and Zelda-inspired puzzles and dungeons, providing something for any action-adventure lover.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn, another PlayStation exclusive and the first of its kind, was eventually ported to PC. Horizon Zero Dawn is an excellent action role-playing game that takes players on the journey of a teenage hunter trying to survive in a world overrun by machines. The game’s elements are quite similar to those of God of War, and players will like it. Horizon Forbidden West, a sequel to the game, will be released on PS4 and PS5 on February 18, 2022. Upgrades to the new-gen version are free for last-gen players.
Assassin’s Creed Oddysey
We’ll confess that Assassin’s Creed had become stale in previous years until 2017’s Origins injected new life into the series, bringing a completely new story and gameplay style while maintaining the series’ streamlined combat and navigation. It should be noted that even though Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the latest game in the series, it has some slight flaws and we don’t recommend it.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey intended to build on the momentum that had already been established, and it far beyond expectations. The game further blurs the boundary between realism and power fantasy by including a stunningly realistic representation of ancient Greece, which is perfectly up Kratos’ alley. In addition, the Ubisoft open-world game’s combat engine is beefed up with more showy executions and lethal playstyle options.
Red Dead Redemption 2
With Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar Games blew everyone away, and everyone was wondering how they could top such an incredible experience. With the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, the studio was able to answer this issue emphatically.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is without a doubt one of the best open-world games of all time, completely embracing all of the genre’s strengths — and flaws — to produce a captivating story that would cement Rockstar’s status as one of the top open-world creators of all time.
The Last of Us Part II
The Last Of Us Part II may be one of the most divisive video game releases of all time, but no one can deny the game’s technological brilliance. In a fantastic sequel to one of the greatest games ever developed, Ellie’s tale fully comes into its own.
While The Last Of Us Part II is not a role-playing title in the traditional sense, it does contain enough RPG aspects to set it apart from the rest of the cookie-cutter action games on the market.
Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost Of Tsushima, Sucker Punch’s latest release, is an immensely stunning adventure across the lovely landscapes of Japan during the first Mongol invasion, with a title that is as intriguing as it gets. Ghost of Tsushima is a one-of-a-kind game. It’s also an action-adventure game set in a stunning open-world Japan. A warrior is on a quest to defend Tsushima Island from an invasion.
The battle system is one-of-a-kind, the plot is engaging, and the game’s aesthetics are beautiful in every meaning of the term, resulting in a one-of-a-kind experience from beginning to end.
Character development is comparable to God of War, and the game is said to be getting a PC port soon.
Devil May Cry 5
Devil May Cry 5 stays true to the franchise’s essence while also introducing a simplified score system for newbies. Players control three demonic-powered main characters: Dante, Nero, and V, as they struggle to stop the Demon King Urizen from shattering the mortal realm in this hack-and-slash action game set five years after DMC 4.
Despite the fact that the two series eventually diverged, DMC 5’s brutally rewarding combat isn’t different to God of War 2018, and even more so to the older GOW titles. Give Capcom’s latest entry a shot if you appreciate ripping enemies apart in unique ways and don’t mind settling for a demonic prince instead of a Greek god.
