Wolves Opinion: Splashing £36.2 million on Morgan Sanson would be a massive blunder

According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Wolves have reportedly made a verbal agreement to sign French midfielder Morgan Sanson from Marseille for a staggering £36.2 million at the end of the season.

The deal, if it materializes, would see Wolves smash their transfer record for the second time in 2019, as the agreed fee for the 24-year-old central midfielder would eclipse the £32.6 million that they forked out to sign Raul Jimenez permanently from Atletico Madrid.

The Birmingham Mail also understands that Sanson was linked with moves to Arsenal and Spurs last summer, while he has been monitored closely by Borussia Dortmund this time around, with a view to a potential move in the summer.

Sanson is currently one of the most highly-rated central midfielders in the French top-flight and was a key cog of the Marseille side that made it to the finals of the UEFA Europa League last season, eventually losing out to Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old has made a total of 31 appearances in Ligue 1 this term, accumulating 4 goals and 3 assists in the process.

The Frenchman rose through the youth ranks at Le Mans in the French second-tier before earning a move to the top-flight with Montpellier back in 2013. Sanson impressed during his time and Montpellier and carved out a big reputation for himself, which prompted Marseille to make a move for him in 2017.

In all, Sanson has proven himself to be a wonderful signing for the Ligue 1 club, contributing with 17 goals and 14 assists from 106 appearances for Marseille in all competitions till date, figures which are certainly quite impressive for a central midfielder.

To put things into perspective, Wolves links with another midfielder should come as a bit of surprise to the fans at Molineux given that the Black County outfit already have plenty of cover in their central midfield department.

Undoubtedly, Sanson has been impressive for Montpellier and Marseille over the last five seasons or so but Wolves should give this move a second thought, particularly because of that eye-watering price tag of £36.2 million.

Ruben Neves has been the standout performer for Wolves in the Premier League this season, with the Portuguese enforcer making eyeballs turn with his high work-rate, immaculate distribution and impeccable free-kicks.

At 21, he is certainly amongst the best young central midfielders in the world and Wolves might have to brace themselves for offers should the big clubs come calling for his services.

Joao Moutinho has proven himself to be one of the biggest bargains of the season and the veteran has shown that he still has enough gas let in his tank to deliver the goods in the Premier League.

Leander Dendocker, who is currently on loan from Anderlecht, has strengthened his claims for making his stay permanent with some impressive performances over the last couple of months, while Romain Saiss has also filled in admirably in central midfield and at centre-back whenever Nuno Santo has handed him a chance.

Furthermore, Wolves have the young and electric presence of Morgan Gibbs-White, who can play a multitude of positions in the midfield.

Suffice to say, Wolves do not need another midfielder in their ranks, certainly not for such a high transfer fee.

Signing Morgan Sanson would only eat into Wolves’ transfer budget and they would certainly do better by investing in a back-up striker to take the pressure off Jimenez, with the likes of Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro and Adama Traore not doing enough in their first season in the Premier League.

Sanson, though a really useful player, would hardly be an upgrade on the existing midfield options at Molineux, and Wolves should remember that his success in Ligue 1 doesn’t guarantee that he will be able to replicate that same kind of form in the Premier League, which is head and shoulders above the French top-flight in terms of quality and intensity.

With that being said, Wolves should avoid investing in Morgan Sanson this summer and look at other options if they really want to bolster their squad.
