The fairytale comeback story has got a perfect conclusion. The World No. 152 Borna Coric defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals of the Cincinnati Masters to become the lowest-ranked player to win a Masters trophy.
Borna Coric stamped his authority on the tournament with a spectacular win against Rafael Nadal. He didn’t stop there as he defeated in-form players like World No. 7 Felix Auger-Aliassime, World No. 9 Cameron Norrie, and world No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas en route to winning his third title and first since 2018.
The Croatian returned to the ATP Tour in March after undergoing right shoulder surgery last year. A few months later, he has bagged his biggest title thus far.
After the win, he said: “I have no words, to be honest. It’s just an unbelievable feeling,” the winner said. “I’m just gonna enjoy this.
“I thought I could play well. I was training hard, and I knew I could play good tennis, but to play this level of tennis – I was just not aware.”
He also admitted that he felt before the tournament that he was going to lose in the first round.
“I was not ready for this speech five days ago, I thought I was going to lose in the first round,” said the 25-year-old.
After this sensational performance, Coric has made some great progress in the ATP rankings and reached No. 29 – A surreal rise of 123 spots.
