14th seed Pablo Carreno Busta squares off against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open on Wednesday.
Pablo Carreno Busta
The experienced Spaniard came into the tournament after suffering an exit in the round of 16 of the Adelaide International 2. Carreno Busta lost to eventual champion Soon-woo Kwon after winning the first set.
The 31-year-old locked horns with Argentina’s Pedro Cachin in the first round. Carreno Busta won the match in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). During the match, the Gijon-born player fired 15 aces and did not commit a double fault. With a staggering win percentage of 89 on the first serve, Carreno Busta turned out to be too hot to handle for Cachin.
The 26-year-old has played a couple of tournaments so far in 2023. In the Maharashtra Open, Bonzi made it to his first-ever WTA Tour-level final and lost to Tallon Griekspoor after bagging the first set. At the Adelaide International 2, Bonzi was ousted in the first round by Robin Haase.
Bonzi faced Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in the first round of the Australian Open. The former won the match after dropping the first set. Like his upcoming opponent, Bonzi also hit 15 aces. The match ended 4-6, 6-3,7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in favor of the Frenchman.
