Aston Villa Opinion: Signing Tavernier would boost Villa’s PL hopes

According to a recent report by Birmingham Live, recently-promoted Premier League club Aston Villa are said to be looking to bolster their squad in order to achieve their ambitions next season. They are said to be targeting Rangers’ skipper James Tavernier in what would be an absolutely sensational move by the Villans.

James Tavernier is a 27-year-old English centre-half who was a product of the Newcastle United youth academy.

After spending a multitude of seasons out on loan at lower league English clubs, including Rotherham and Shrewsbury, he was finally sold to Wigan in the summer of 2014. After this switch though, his value dropped quite heavily and he was loaned out just six months after he was brought on.

Despite moving to a slightly more competitive club in Bristol City, Tavernier wasn’t able to set himself and returned to Wigan at the end of the season. Less than a full year after joining the Latics, he was sold out to the Scottish Premiership when he went on to join a world-renowned Glasgow Rangers outfit.

Since making the switch to the Ibrox though, the Englishman’s development has increased at an alarming pace and he is certainly one of the best players in the Scottish league today. His movement and forward runs down the flank are a feature of Rangers’ attacking play and his defensive abilities are of the highest order too.

Over the time he has spent at the Ibrox, he has really turned into a fan-favourite. His performances have always inspired the team to move in the right direction and it was leadership skills like that which earned him the captain’s armband as well.

Now the skipper of the side, Tavernier has grown into a mature and high-quality defender making him the ideal target for Premier League clubs.

The English right-back’s stats over his Rangers career read 43 goals and 59 assists from 197 appearances and at just under a goal involvement every two games, those numbers are unreal for a man who is considered to be a defender. This season too, he’s certainly stepped up to the plate when it mattered for the Gers.

With 11 goals and 14 assists in the league this season, he has the quality to perform at the highest level and Aston Villa need players who are willing to put in their maximum in order to help the side stay up.

Tavernier’s versatility makes him a great option for Villa, who will need to spend on more than one player in the transfer market if they are to survive the unforgiving nature of Premier League football.
