Aston Villa Opinion: Why the Villans should go all out to sign Maxi Gomez?
Defensor Sporting Club chief Ney Castillo has told the Tiempo de Fútbol on Sport 890 that Aston Villa want to sign Maxi Gomez from Celta Vigo.
Maxi Gomez, 22, who used to play for Defensor in Uruguay, is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in Spain. He has attracted interest from various clubs after scoring 13 goals for Celta Vigo in La Liga over the past campaign. The Uruguayan also supplied five assists and was one of the prime reasons why Celta avoided relegation to the second tier.
Gomez has been linked with a move to Aston Villa, who earned promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs. The Villans have already made one signing this summer, with Jota coming in from Birmingham City as part of a swap deal. They are also willing to sign Anwar El Ghazi and Tyrone Mings permanently from Lille and Bournemouth respectively after successful loan spells.
But Villa boss Dean Smith needs to accept that it is unlikely that Chelsea will allow Tammy Abraham out on loan again or sell him this summer after enduring a potential two-window transfer ban.
Tammy Abraham was a crucial cog in Villa’s promotion last season, scoring 25 goals in 40 games. His goals weighed in gold and those will be hard to replace in the Premier League. In Maxi Gomez, though, Smith might have just the player who could replace the Chelsea man at Villa Park.
Gomez has impressed in two La Liga seasons so far, scoring 31 goals and supplying 10 assists in 75 appearances for Celta Vigo. The 22-year-old possesses a lot of pace and power, with excellent finishing ability in front of goal. His hold up play will help bring the best out of Jack Grealish, John McGinn and new signing, Jota.
The Uruguay forward is one of those strikers who has pace, physicality, aerial prowess and shooting power to become a headache for defenders at all times. Gomez has an absolute hammer of a right foot and is adept at finding the net with powerful drives, whilst his ability to play defence-splitting through balls is an added asset to any team.

Also, he is a reliable goal threat and would be an upgrade on the likes of Kodjia and Abraham.
Verdict
The prospects are enticing but completing a deal for one of Europe’s hot properties won’t be easy. If Aston Villa did land Gomez it would be a real statement of intent ahead of the new campaign.
