Aston Villa Opinion: Why the Villans should go all out for Fikayo Tomori?

According to a report from Birmingham Mail, newly-promoted Premier League club Aston Villa have made an approach to sign Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori.

Fikayo Tomori, 21, is one of the exciting academy graduates to emerge out of Chelsea in recent seasons and he enhanced his growing reputation during a fantastic campaign on loan at Derby County, where he was named the Rams’ Player of the Year.

The defender was part of the Derby side beaten by Aston Villa in last month’s play-off final. Tomori has returned back to his parent club but he could be available on a permanent transfer. Chelsea value their academy graduate at £12m, adds the report.

That being said, Aston Villa must go all out to sign Tomori from Chelsea to bolster their defensive ranks ahead of their Premier League.

Villa have already made their presence felt in the summer transfer window by signing Jota from Birmingham City on Wednesday. They have also triggered an option to sign Wolves defender Kortney Hause for £3million and will also complete the signing of Anwar El Ghazi from Lille soon after activating the option to buy the 24-year-old winger following his successful loan spell at Villa Park.

Dean Smith has wasted no time in shaping his squad for the Premier League challenge. Despite signing Hause permanently, he’ll need a couple of defenders more in the squad as the likes of Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrone Mings have returned back to their parent clubs following the expiry of their loans.

Tuanzebe and Mings had formed a rock-solid partnership at the back and their presence was one of the primary reasons behind Aston Villa’s promotion. However, they have left the club and Smith should look to form a new partnership at the back next season with Kortney Hause and Fikayo Tomori.

Tomori’s performances for Derby in the Championship were consistently good, as he formed a solid partnership in central defence with skipper Richard Keogh. He is good on the ball, likes to take risks with his passing from the back and is aerially strong as well. Blessed with a good turn of pace, his positional awareness and maturity while reading the game belie his age.

It’s unlikely to see Tomori get a chance in the Chelsea first-team next season, so a move away from Stamford Bridge would be a wise option. The Canadian-born defender needs to find a club for settling down in his career and Aston Villa could be the ideal destination.

Verdict

Hence, it’s a no-brainer for Smith and Villa to splash the cash and sign Tomori.
