Arsenal Opinion: Why Arsenal should sign Steven Bergwijn in the summer?

Back in June 2018, a report from De Telegraaf claimed Arsenal were one of the host of Premier League clubs interested in signing PSV Eindhoven starlet Steven Bergwijn. However, a move never materialised and the Dutchman stayed put at Eindhoven, signing a new deal until 2022.

But according to last month’s report from FC Inter News, Arsenal seem to have reignited their interest in the 21-year-old winger. The report claims the Gunners are ‘constantly’ making checks on the highly-rated Dutchman, who is valued at around £36million by PSV Eindhoven.

Steven Bergwijn has enjoyed a stellar season with PSV, scoring 15 goals and assisting 12 times across all competitions. That being said, Arsenal must double up their efforts to sign the 21-year-old forward in the summer.

It is no secret that Arsenal manager Unai Emery wants to sign a winger in the summer transfer window. The Gunners lack an out-and-out winger, with Alex Iwobi the only option Emery has at his disposal. Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have been used on both flanks, but their productivity has been very low.

Given the club’s financial constraints, Emery can’t really afford to splash big money on a number of areas in the team, especially when there are so many problems at the back to address. Steven Bergwijn could, thus, provide a slightly cheaper option for Arsenal to solve their wing department conundrum.

Bergwijn has had a strong season in the Eredivisie, catching the attention with his dazzling displays on the pitch. A skillful, speedy and clinical forward, the young Dutch international has the pace to burn and terrorise defences with his movement. His ability to play on both the right and the left side of the pitch will be a valuable asset for a team that is looking for a consistent supplier of assists of goals.

The youngster’s pace, power, agility and ability to create while also score goals will inject some additional flexibility and could give the Gunners some creativity that have lacked at times in breaching the opposition defences this season.

His main traits are speed, crossing abilities and versatility, and he could flourish into a possession-based style of play Emery has built at the Emirates.

Verdict

Given Bergwijn’s burgeoning potential, Arsenal must not hesitate to splash the cash to sign him. At £36 million, the Dutchman would represent a bargain deal in a few years’ time. Hence, Emery should definitely bolster the Gunners’ attacking options with the signature of Bergwijn.
