Arsenal Opinion: Why the Gunners should go all out to sign David Alaba?

According to a report from the Express, Arsenal manager Unai Emery wants to make five new signings this summer.

The Gunners finished outside of the top four this past season, although they still have a chance to play in the Champions League provided they win the Europa League final against Chelsea. Success in the Europa League final will also boost Unai Emery’s transfer kitty, as the Gunners look to improve next season.

After a productive first season at the Emirates, Emery will be hoping he’ll have sufficient funds available to spend after only being able to sign loan players this January. The Spaniard will be keen to strengthen his ranks this summer, particularly his leaky backline which conceded above 51 goals in the 2018/19.

And as per the report, Arsenal are interested in signing Bayern Munich star David Alaba.

David Alaba, 26, has been playing at Bayern Munich since 2008, having joined as a youngster from Austria Wien. He has established himself as one of the world’s best full-backs but the Austrian has had few injury problems over the last couple of seasons which seems to have hampered his progress.

And the left-back, who still has two years remaining on his contract at the Allianz Arena, could find himself out of favour next season following the German champions’ record signing of Lucas Hernandez. The Frenchman penned a five-year deal to become Bayern’s record transfer, meaning current star Alaba will likely be on the list for potential exits this summer.

That gives Unai Emery’s Gunners a massive boost in their pursuit of Alaba, who has also admitted him being an Arsenal fan. The Austrian international signing would represent a major coup for Emery, whilst him being a direct replacement for Nacho Monreal.

Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac have rotated at left-back over the last two seasons. But Monreal is 33 and is out of contract next summer, while Kolasinac is best served at left wing-back position. That makes complete sense for Arsenal to go all out to sign Alaba in a bid to bolster their defensive options.

In Alaba, Emery would get a highly versatile player, who can play at left-back, left wing-back, central defence, in midfield and as a left winger. His athleticism and burst of speed causes a lot of problems to the opposition and his end product is superb as well.

A set-piece expert, the 26-year-old’s crosses will be a treat for the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, whilst his experience will be invaluable in a dressing room that is often criticised for its lacklustre mentality.

Verdict

With Bayern breaking the bank for Lucas Hernandez, Arsenal could well have the opportunity to sign Alaba and take a big step in their bid to build a squad capable of competing for league titles again.
