Arsenal Opinion: Why the Gunners should avoid signing Ayoze Perez?

According to a report from The Sun, Arsenal are interested in signing Ayoze Perez from Newcastle United in the summer. The Newcastle United star is also said to be on the radar of Serie A duo Inter Milan and Napoli.

Ayoze Perez, 25, has been at Newcastle United since 2014 and has netted a career best of 12 Premier League goals this term. He admitted last month that he would be open to new opportunities at the end of this campaign.

The report claims Arsenal are keen to add the Spaniard to their squad ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, as Unai Emery looks at a few low-key transfers. To that end, should the Gunners make a move for Ayoze Perez?

Ayoze Perez

The answer is no, as Arsenal can do a lot better than signing Perez, who is valued at around £25million by the Magpies. Perez has just enjoyed his best season since joining Newcastle from Spanish outfit Tenerife in 2014. He has just hit double figures in a single league campaign for the first time in his career, with 12 goals to his name, including a hat-trick against Southampton in April.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have a lot of attacking options, with the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Alex Iwobi, Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang forming a formidable attacking unit under Emery. But Aaron Ramsey is off to Juventus in the summer, which would leave a huge void in the north Londoners’ squad.

Emery is aware that Ramsey is leaving the club and his departure will certainly affect the squad. The Welshman has always given his everything playing for Arsenal and his exit will be a huge loss for the club. What is more disturbing for the fans is he’ll be joining Juventus on a free transfer in the summer transfer window.

But could Perez replace Ramsey at the Emirates? Definitely not, both the players are very different from each other with a different set of qualities. Perez has been in England for five years now and has been decent for Newcastle, but he hasn’t really taken his game to the next level. His time with the Magpies has been hugely inconsistent, as he has shown his tendency to fade in and out of games.

Plus, Emery is aware he will have very little to spend over the summer, with the Arsenal board set to provide a very tight budget for the upcoming transfer window. For £25million, Emery can definitely get a better player than Perez, or the Spanish tactician can choose to solidify other areas of the pitch.

Verdict

Thus, it’s a no-brainer for Emery and Arsenal to avoid signing Perez, even though the Spanish attacker is starting to show his true colours and will hit his prime in the next year or so.
