In 2010, he toppled John Morgan of MMA Junkie to win the MMA Journalist of the Year at the World MMA Awards and has won the award ever since (for 10 straight years).
His success at MMA Fighting earned him a chance as a pre-fight and post-fight reporter for UFC on behalf of Fox Sports. He rose quickly to become one of the key reporters of the promotion.
However, in 2016 he was banned for life by UFC President Dana White after he leaked the return of Brock Lesnar (for UFC 200) even before the promotion could officially announce it. He was also banned from Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather, the next year.
In 2018, Helwani joined ESPN, and became their head MMA reporter. He hosted the DC & Helwani MMA show alongside former UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, which was a big hit.
After 3 years with ESPN, Helwani once again returned to MMA Fighting, and has begun hosting the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani once again – a show that has been running for more than 10 years.
