Leeds United Opinion: Why the Whites should go all out for Michael Frey?

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are interested in Fenerbahce striker Michael Frey. The Swiss forward, 24, has just completed his first season in the Turkish top flight and has caught the eye of Leeds United.

The future of Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa is the hot topic amongst the Elland Road faithful. There has been growing concern that the veteran Argentine won’t renew his contract with the Whites after they failed to win promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs. Thus, the Whites’ first job would be to secure Bielsa’s future for the next season.

The Yorkshire giants have already started their preparations for next season. It appears as though a striker who can challenge Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford for a starting place is high on their list of priorities.

The Whites are interested in Michael Frey, who scored five goals in 25 appearances for Fenerbahce last term. The Swiss endured a frustrating season due to recurrent injury problems that restricted him to just 19 starts in the Turkish Super Lig.

Also, he had to compete with experienced players like Roberto Soldado and Islam Slimani, meaning the 24-year-old didn’t quite have the campaign to boast about.

However, Frey could be an inspired addition for the Leeds’ attacking ranks. He is an unproven talent and would come off the back of a start-stop season with Fenerbahce, but the Swiss forward would offer a different dimension in the attack. Standing at 6ft 2in, he is more than just an aerial threat.

The former Young Boys star is a good finisher inside the box and very strong in the air. His towering frame makes him an all-day threat during dead-ball situations. Frey falls in the mould of a target man and that is a kind of striker Leeds United don’t have in their ranks.

In short, the Fenerbahce star would fulfil Leeds’ requirement of a striker who can either play with Bamford and Roofe or be an impact substitute in moments of need.

Verdict

The potential acquisition of Frey would undoubtedly bolster Leeds’ attacking ranks, whilst providing cover and competition for Roofe and Bamford. It might be a strange choice but the Munsingen-born star is 24 and can certainly revive his career under Bielsa at Elland Road.

At the right price, Frey can be a smart addition for the Whites.
