Tomljanovic was born in Zagreb to a Croatian father Ratko Tomljanovic and a Bosniak mother Emina. Ratko played handball professionally and won the 1992 and 1993 handball European Cup tournaments. Ajla has an older sister Hana, who played tennis for the University of Virginia.

Tomljanovic began playing tennis at the age of six and moved to Florida for training when she was 13. She is coached by Fernando Martinez and Rene Gomez.

Tomljanovic played her first professional ITF Circuit event in October 2008 in Mexico City and lost to Estefania Carciun in the semifinals. She won her first ITF doubles title on 10 May 2009 in Zagreb, partnering with fellow Croatian Petra Martic. Tomljanovic missed the majority of the 2012 season owing to mononucleosis.

At the 2014 French Open, she began on a great note by upsetting former champion Francesca Schiavone in the first round. She reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam event for the first time in her career.

Tomljanovic reached her first WTA Tour-level final at the 2015 Thailand Open. She was ousted in the final by Daniela Hantuchova.
