Why Newcastle United should cash in Rolando Aarons amid interest

According to the Daily Mail (h/t Shields Gazette), forgotten Newcastle United man Rolando Aarons was a target for Huddersfield Town but the move failed to materialize. 

Aarons has failed to make the cut in Steve Bruce’s 25-man squad for the Premier League this season and was available for a transfer as the Newcastle looked to trim their squad.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Rolando Aarons started his footballing education at Bristol City before joining Newcastle United’s youth system in 2012. He burst on to the scene as a promising teenager in the Premier League back during the 2014-15 season but has been limited to just 27 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies. 

Aarons has spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe Wanderers in the Football League, as well as at Motherwell, Slovan Liberec, and Hellas Verona elsewhere in Europe. The left-footed winger, though, has hardly made a positive impression on his loan spells and currently has less than 100 senior appearances under his belt.

Aarons needs a permanent move away from Newcastle

Rolando Aarons was held in high regard as the next big thing to come through the academy ranks at Newcastle when he first broke into the senior set-up six years ago. However, his career has long been on a downward spiral after a promising start at Tyneside, with injuries also contributing to his downfall. 

The last time that Aarons played in a competitive fixture for Newcastle was way back during the 2017-18 campaign. He has been a part of the club’s loan army over the past three years, with several new signings restricting his game time. It isn’t a big surprise that the Magpies haven’t tried to reintegrate him into their set-up, considering that the winger has struggled to prove his worth on loan.

Aarons hasn’t made the cut into Steve Bruce’s PL squad for the 2020-21 season, which is a clear indication that he is not in the manager’s plans for the foreseeable future. Newcastle currently have quality players like Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron, Matt Ritchie, and Ryan Fraser competing for places out wide, so it’s not hard to understand why Aarons has been left out.

Verdict

Suffice to say, there doesn’t seem to be any way back for Rolando Aarons at Newcastle and with just one year remaining on his current deal, the Magpies should look to cash in on him in January to secure some kind of a fee for the winger. 

Looking at things from Aarons’ perspective, a permanent move away from Newcastle should allow him to settle down somewhere else and provide him with a good opportunity to rebuild his tottering career.

At 24, he’s still got time on his side and it wouldn’t make any sense for the Magpies to stand in the way of their out-of-favour star. So despite a failed summer move, Newcastle should look to arrange an exit for Rolando Aarons in January.
