AEW Dynamite Results and Grades 22 April 2020: Did Dustin Rhodes retire from AEW?

AEW Dynamite Results and Grades: This week’s AEW Dynamite had a couple of big TNT Championship quarter-finals.

Sammy Guevara was to face Darby Allin while Dustin Rhodes took on Kip Sabain.

Apart from that, Orange Cassidy was to fight in singles competition while we got an update from MJF regarding his health and lack of time on AEW.

There were some interesting segments featuring Brodie Lee too, and here are the results and grades from this week’s AEW Dynamite.

Guevara vs Allin

Cody Rhodes cut a promo before the start of this match where he checked out the rest of the competition in the TNT Championship.

The American Nightmare claimed that all of his rivals, including Dustin, could win the title.

Chris Jericho was on commentary duty and talked up Allin before he was attacked by Guevara. Le Champion added on commentary that this was the plan by the Inner Circle as the bell hadn’t even rung.

Guevara continued dominating after the match but the clash swung back and forth. Allin even applied an ankle lock and started headbutting the caught ankle.

Guevara kicked out and later on applied the 540 splash to almost win the match. However, it was Allin that got the W thanks to the Last Supper.

Grade A

A fantastic match between two of the best in AEW. Not to forget, the promo from Cody was great too. Either star could have won since they are on a rise, but Allin is the singles competitor for now while Guevara has the backing of the Inner Circle.

Guevara vs Allin should continue for a while and we should get some classics from the pair.

Welcome to the Hardy compound

The rivalry between Matt Hardy and Jericho continued for another week. Woken Matt Hardy explained why he wanted to fight Jericho in a match called ‘The Elite Deletion’.

Hardy even broke character to become his normal self and explained why he was teaming up against the Inner Circle.

The former WWE star also said he would beat Guevara’s a** if Jericho sent his teammate over, despite being a quality wrestler.

Grade B

The promo was decent enough but it would have been great if Hardy was in the ring rather than the compound.

Nevertheless, we should see one of those gimmick location matches soon, and hopefully, AEW creative can do something great with Hardy and Jericho.

Tag champion in action

While Adam Page hasn’t been seen much on AEW, his tag partner and half of the tag champion, Kenny Omega, has done a lot of fighting.

Omega took on Alan Angels and really took his rival to school. Angels did get some hits in, however, it was Omega that picked up a win thanks to several V-Triggers.

Grade C

The match should have been a short squash but it went on for far too long. Another downside is that this doesn’t build Omega’s character or Angels’ so no one knows why it took place.

Cassidy in action

Orange Cassidy was in singles competition against Jimmy Havoc. Cassidy was accompanied by Chuck Taylor and Trent, however, Orange was taken out early by Havoc.

Havoc tried to break Cassidy’s hand as he screamed in agony. However, Cassidy made a bit of a comeback and he even hit a splash for a close call.

Penelope Ford came out to distract Taylor and Trent with Sabian also hitting the duo. This allowed Cassidy to take advantage and rolled-up Havoc for the win.

Havoc and Sabian then beat up Cassidy before Taylor and Trent made the save.

Grade B

Cassidy in action is always fun but this felt like a proper beating he was getting before picking up the surprise win.

Also, it didn’t make much sense for Havoc and Sabian to team-up all of a sudden.

MJF speaks on his issues

MJF highlighted that he had injured himself gambling a few weeks back and picked up serious injuries.

However, MJF would return to action soon and even went on to say that he would be the AEW World Champion.

Grade C

This was just filler to explain why MJF hasn’t been in a lot of action. They at least played his character well with the whole gambling leading to an injury.

Wardlow in action

Lee Johnson took on Wardlow and Mr Mayhem made short work of his opponent. Johnson actually got a few hits in early on before Wardlow took control and threw his opponent around for fun.

Wardlow picked up the easy win in the end.

Grade B

Squash matches without a story don’t work but fortunately, AEW made Wardlow look like a destroyer and he was impressive even without the support of MJF.

The Exalted One in action

Brodie Lee returned to AEW for in-ring action as he faced Justin Law. Lee also got another member for The Dark Order but has no mercy for Law.

Lee defeated the talent before fixing eyes on Marko Stunt as it seems the pair will fight soon.

Grade B

Lee getting a new member shows that there is more to come from the Dark Order. However, him facing off against Stunt doesn’t really make a lot of sense. The Dark Order promised to demolish AEW but this isn’t the way to go about it.

Rhodes vs Sabian

There was a lot riding on this match for Dustin Rhodes as he promised to leave AEW if he lost. Sabian came into this TNT Championship quarter-final with Ford beside him while Brandi Rhodes was beside Dustin.

Sabian targetted Dustin’s knees but the veteran was able to overcome that and even tried to pick up a pin.

Sabian then kept on beating Dustin with the referee stepping in. Outside, Brandi speared Ford for trying to interrupt the match which allowed Dustin to hit the Code Red and pick up the win.

Grade B

The match was great as both stars got to show what they can do in the ring. The retirement stipulation didn’t make a lot of sense, however, Brandi spearing Ford was one of the plus points from this clash.
