Norwich City Opinion: Why Dwight Gayle would be a top signing for Norwich?

West Brom have opted not to make Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle’s move permanent following his season on loan with the Championship play-off semi-finalists.

Gayle, 28, who arrived on a swap loan deal with Salomon Rondon last August, notched 24 goals for West Brom in the Championship, as the Baggies narrowly missed out on promotion after defeat to Aston Villa in the playoff semi-finals. Now, he looks likely to leave Newcastle this summer after West Brom opted not to sign him permanently.

This has alerted a lot of clubs, with newly-promoted duo Norwich City and Aston Villa interested in signing the 28-year-old. The Birmingham Mail claim Newcastle value Gayle around £20m, which is deemed too expensive for West Brom.

That being said, Norwich must make an attempt and beat Aston Villa to Gayle’s signature.

The Canaries will need to strengthen their squad to have any chance of surviving in the Premier League. Daniel Farke has a really exciting squad but there is still a lot of room for improvement in the summer transfer window.

Teemu Pukki was a revelation for Norwich City, as his brilliance carried the Norfolk club to the Premier League. But Farke simply cannot rely on Pukki to make the similar impact in the English top-flight. The German tactician needs more firepower up front as an injury or suspension to the Finnish marksman will be a huge blow for the Canaries, which might potentially cost them a place in the Premier League at the end of next season.

To avoid such circumstances, Farke should look to add to the attacking depth, with Pukki being the only first team striker at the club as it stands. Thus, a striker has to be a massive priority in this transfer window and Dwight Gayle could be a brilliant addition for Farke’s side.

Gayle has struggled at the top level previously, but going by the season he has had with West Brom in the Championship, the 28-year-old should be given another chance. In Gayle, Farke will get a versatile forward who is capable of operating as a second striker as well as on the flanks.

The former Crystal Palace star would be a fantastic back-up to Pukki up front, whilst his pace, movement and agility could make Norwich’s attack more potent. The 28-year-old is a lethal finisher, and alongside the likes of Emi Buendia, Marco Stiepermann and Onel Hernandez, he would undoubtedly boost the Canaries’ hopes of survival in the Premier League.

Gayle has top-flight experience and he would give Farke an entirely different option to what Pukki offers at Carrow Road.

Verdict

Pukki needs another player to share the goalscoring responsibility next season if Norwich are to do well in the Premier League. And Gayle would represent a safe bet for Farke and company.
