Aston Villa Opinion: Keeping Mings at Villa Park must become a priority

According to a recent report by the Daily Star, Aston Villa’s winter loan signing Tyrone Mings is being linked with a possible permanent move to Villa Park this summer.

The Englishman has impressed heavily since joining from parent club Bournemouth in January and he helped Aston Villa toughen up their back-line and even secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Having had to do it the hard way, Villa were extremely fluent and comfortable during the playoffs this season and they saw off Frank Lampard’s Derby County side in the final with relative ease.

Mings’ contract at Villa is a short-term one which means that his time in Dean Smith’s side could be drawing to a gradual close.

Although he has returned to the Bournemouth camp after securing promotion for Villa, he is still being linked with a move to the side where he became a real fan-favourite within a short period of time.

His commanding displays in the heart of defence inspired Dean Smith’s men in the latter part of the season despite finding themselves in the bottom half of the table at Christmas.

Since making the switch from the Vitality stadium to Villa Park in January, the 26-year-old has scored 2 goals for the Villans over 15 league appearances.

He even started all three of their playoff fixtures and did extremely well to see off the threat of the highly-potent Derby County attack in the final of what was an intense and exciting competition.

After having a small stint at the Southampton academy as a child, it wasn’t until he joined Ipswich in the winter of 2012 that he rose to supremacy again.

He was identified as a top defensive talent by the chiefs at Bournemouth and a deal was struck between the clubs in the summer of 2015. After spending more than 4 years at the Vitality, he was finally loaned out again this season due to lack of playing opportunities.

A tall centre-half, the Englishman has the physical attributes to intimidate most strikers in world football. He can be deceptively quick for a man his size and he also boasts almost Herculean strength.

His presence in either box is another one of his main assets as he often pitches in goal-saving headed clearances and match-saving headed goals.

His future at the Vitality is certainly under question as he was slowly dragged away from the first-team picture in the opening half of last season.

His performances since making the switch to Villa were quite inspiring and that should certainly be enough motivation for them to try and secure a permanent deal for the 26-year-old before the transfer window slams shut.
