Wolves should look to snap up Marcos Rojo for a cut-price deal in January

According to the Sun, Manchester United’s out-of-favour centre-back Marcos Rojo is likely to head for the exit door at Old Trafford in January and Premier League new boys Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested to sign the Argentine international.

The 28-year-old has found regular minutes hard to come by since the start of last season and is yet to feature for the Red Devils this term after recovering from a knee injury that he had picked up in January. He did make it to the matchday squad for the game against Everton in October but wasn’t called into action by Jose Mourinho.

The Argentine international was a regular for United during the 2016-17 Premier League season and was one of the cornerstones of the club’s Europa League triumph under Mourinho.

Rojo, who scored the all-important winner for his nation against Nigeria in the group stages of the World Cup at Russia, has been deemed surplus to the club’s demands with Mourinho looking to add new faces to bolster his options at the back.

Meanwhile, Wolves have made a solid start to the season under Nuno Espirito Santo and the new boys sit 11th in the standings with 16 points from their first 12 games. Nuno Santo’s men have kept as many as four clean sheets this season and much of their success in the top-flight has been down to the exploits of the defenders.

While Matt Doherty and Jonny Otto Castro has contributed equally to both defence and attack, the centre-back pairing of Willy Boly, Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett have put in some excellent shifts at the back to keep the opposition at bay. In fact, Santo’s preferred 3-4-3 formation has been hugely successful in the Premier League so far.

However, Wolves need more depth in their squad to challenge for top ten finish, if not, a Europa League spot next season. With the kind of start that they have made to their campaign, a spot in Europe should not be beyond the grasp of this immensely talented unit.

And Marcos Rojo would be the ideal man to provide cover and competition for the three regular centre-backs in the team. Rojo’s versatility, which allows him to play as a wing-back on the left, should also prompt Nuno Santo to make a move for him in January.

Rojo is not the most disciplined of defenders and has the habit of letting the team down with lapses in concentration but his agility and physical presence would be valuable assets to Wolves’ backline.

To go with his agility, Rojo is also capable of dominating the opposition with his physicality and aerial prowess. The Argentine international is also a very good passer of the ball and has the ability to set up attacks from the back. Furthermore, he has a good technique which allows him to run comfortably with the ball at his feet.

That said, Rojo’s experience of playing in the Europa League might prove to be a huge boost for the Premier League new boys. Still only 28, Rojo has plenty to offer at the highest level and a move to the Molineux would be ideal for all parties concerned.
