Why Liverpool should sign Kylian Mbappe next summer

According to Le Parisien (h/t Daily Mail), Liverpool are one of the clubs who are in contention to sign Kylian Mbappe next season. The PSG star has not shown much eagerness to sign a new deal with the French powerhouse.

His current deal expires in 2022 and the club may be forced into a sale next summer if they intend to not lose him for free the following season. Real Madrid are the other club who are being talked about as his potential destination.

A product of the AS Bondy youth academy, the 21-year-old moved to AS Monaco’s youth setup in 2013. From there began his meteoric rise as he progressed through the various age levels in quick time.

Despite being a part of the U-19s, Mbappe was often called up to the senior side. It was in 2017 that he truly exploded onto the scene as Monaco made a fairy tale run in the Champions League and broke PSG’s monopoly in the Ligue 1. In 60 appearances for Monaco, he scored 27 goals and assisted 16.

PSG decided to sign him on loan initially in 2017 with an obligation to buy in 2018. Since then, Mbappe has gone on to become one of the best young players in the world. So far, he has played 128 games for the Parisians, scoring a staggering 94 goals and 55 assists (source – Transfermarkt).

Mbappe has become a vital part of the national team as well, playing an important role in their 2018 FIFA World Cup victory. He has 36 caps and 14 goals for Les Bleus to date.

Should Liverpool go for Mbappe next summer?

Mbappe’s current contract situation means that PSG might have to look for a sale next summer. He has not shown the urge to sign any new deal so far. Come next summer, he could well be available for a rather decent price.

Liverpool may have one of the best front-threes in world football but there does remain a weak spot. Despite playing as a forward, Roberto Firmino’s goal contributions have left a lot to be desired. That has, in turn, put pressure on Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to keep the goals flowing.

Sure, Firmino isn’t an orthodox striker and has his own style of play that works for Liverpool. However, Liverpool need to look at Mbappe as a realistic option next season. He is a guaranteed goal-getter and is genuinely world-class.

Imagine a frontline of Mane, Mbappe and Salah. A mouth-watering prospect for Klopp indeed.
