Why Chelsea should bring back former winger Jeremie Boga

According to Get Football News France (h/t Birmingham Mail), Chelsea could activate the buy-back clause of their former winger Jeremie Boga.

The 23-year-old Chelsea academy graduate currently plays for Serie A side Sassuolo, where he has undergone a career renaissance since leaving Stamford Bridge in 2018. Touted as a potential future star, Boga found it extremely difficult to break into the Blues line-up due to the presence of world-class stars such as Eden Hazard, Willian, and others.

This saw the young winger spend the majority of his time at Chelsea on loan with sides such as Stade Rennais, Granada and Birmingham respectively before earning himself a move to Sassuolo. However, Boga seems to have revived his career since moving to Italy, making 52 appearances for the Serie A outfit and racking up 11 goals and 5 assists in the process.

The young Ivorian has been excellent this season for Sassuolo, scoring 8 goals and providing 4 assists from 24 league games. His eye-catching displays in the attack have seen him emerge as one of the first few names on the team sheet under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Boga can offer Chelsea more options across the flanks

Meanwhile, Boga’s displays on the field have not gone unnoticed with many European clubs now lining up for the in-form winger’s signature. However, the report also suggests that Chelsea might activate the buy-back clause they had inserted in Boga’s contract while selling him to Sassuolo.

Premier League side Chelsea, on the other hand, are on the lookout for new wingers with the contracts of veterans Willian and Pedro set to expire at the end of this season.

Both Willian and Pedro have been the Blues’ top players since their move to Stamford Bridge. 31-year-old Willian is a two-time Premier League and FA Cup winner with the Blues while Pedro has one league title and an FA Cup under his belt.

With both the player’s future at the club remaining an uncertainty at the moment, Chelsea will be left with just Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi as wingers within the side. However, US international Pulisic and academy graduate Hudson-Odoi are still young and it would be safe for Frank Lampard’s side to rope in a new face to bolster his squad’s options next season.

That said, making a move for their former winger Boga seems like a safe bet. Hence, they should immediately activate that buy-back option in Boga’s contract and land the in-form winger, who is valued at around €20million by Sassuolo.

Willian and Pedro’s future at Chelsea remains a question mark right now and it would be best for them to sign a new winger ahead of next season. Considering Boga’s good form and his familiarity with the club, it wouldn’t take him much time to adjust to the new surroundings at Stamford Bridge if a move occurs.
