Why Manchester United must sign Frenkie De Jong from Ajax

A recent report in The Express has linked Frenkie De Jong with a move to Manchester United. De Jong is one of the brightest Dutch talents in recent years.

He recently started for the Dutch national team against France in the ongoing UEFA Nations league. Although Ronald Koeman’s side lost the game 2-1, De Jong impressed with his technique, maturity, dribbling and passing range.

De Jong was signed by Ajax in early 2016 when he was just 18 years of age. Arriving from Willem II, the youngster took some time to settle in with the Dutch giants. He made just 8 appearances across all competitions in 2016/17, which also included a substitute appearance against Manchester United in the 2017 Europa League final.

However, in 2017/18, he finally started to come into his own at the club. He started 16 games in the Eredivisie and came off the bench 6 times. During the whole league campaign, he made 1251 passes with 91% pass accuracy, completing 54 dribbles and providing 32 key passes for his teammates.

His defensive part of the game is also solid, which is evidenced by the fact that he made 24 interceptions and 24 clearances along with 22 tackles.

The report claims that United are fairly confident about getting the player as they have a great relationship with the Dutch giants. Furthermore, since Edwin Van Der Sar is the CEO of Ajax, United must definitely make a move.

Nemanja Matic is already 30 and United need players like De Jong to plan for the future. At 21, De Jong has a lot to learn but he has time on his side to become a top player for the club. Under Jose Mourinho, De Jong could have a great competitive environment to develop – both as a player and as a person.
