3 positions that Leeds have to strengthen in the summer

Leeds United are seven points clear of the Championship play-off spot with 9 more games yet to be played when the season resumes. They are clearly the favourites for automatic qualification after an excellent campaign.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men would move out of this division for the first time in 14 years. The manager has led the team brilliantly and despite a slight dip in form, they have managed to move ahead of fellow promotion chasers West Brom.

However, if they are promoted to the Premier League, the Whites would have to make several changes to the squad to survive and prosper in the top-flight. Let’s take a look at what the priorities should be for the Whites once the summer transfer window commences.

Central defence

The Whites have the best defensive record in the Championship this season, conceding just 30 goals so far. The likes of Ben White, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi has done an excellent job in holding their backline tightly.

However, it is a well-known fact that White is on loan from Brighton and would be on the move at the end of the campaign. However, why shouldn’t the Whites try to sign him on a permanent basis?

The 22-year-old has already settled with the team and has been performing well. He can be a vital player in the top-flight for the Whites. Gaetano Berardi is out of contract in the summer and they have only Liam Cooper available in the ranks. Therefore, signing Ben White or bringing in a defensive replacement is the need of the hour.

Left-winger

Helder Costa, Pablo Hernandez and Ivan Poveda have been of immense help to the squad from the right flank. But Leeds have limited options on the left wing. Jack Harrison is the only option available but he is on loan.

Therefore, it would be wise if the club decides to sign him permanently in the summer since he would not have enough opportunities with Manchester City, his parent club. He has scored 5 goals and provided 7 assists so far and would be the best option at the moment.

Centre-forward

After the departure of Eddie Nketiah in January, Bielsa brought Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan to bolster the attack. But the Frenchman has failed to deliver and is injured. Patrick Bamford is the only established option at the manager’s disposal.

Tyler Roberts is just 22 and is inexperienced. Therefore, with Augustin set to return to RB Leipzig in the summer, it is clear that Bamford needs a partner up front. This would also help in the season-long journey if anyone is injured or needs rest.
