Three of the most unexpected deals in the Scottish Premiership this summer

A transfer season is never complete without two key ingredients – transfer sagas that drag throughout the duration of the window and some unexpected signings that leave most people scratching their heads in confusion.

The latter category often involves minimal to zero speculation, ergo bringing in a sense of surprise and shock. And suffice to say, we saw plenty of those in the recently concluded window.

The summer transfer window will close at the end of the month for clubs in Scotland but certain deals have already been quite unexpected.

Here, we look at three of the most unexpected deals in the Scottish Premiership so far this summer.

1. Adam Bogdan (Hibernian)

Following Loris Karius’ high-profile errors in the UEFA Champions League final in Kiev, most of the goalkeeping news revolved around the German. This was the perfect foil for forgotten keepers Adam Bogdan and Danny Ward to exit Anfield quietly.

Rarely getting the minutes during his three-year spell at Anfield, the Hungarian keeper agreed to a loan deal with Scottish Premiership side Hibernian, effectively seeing out his contract in Merseyside. He will become a free agent next summer.

The player managed just two Premier League appearances and played six times across all competitions for the Reds. North of the border, the Ex-Bolton keeper has already featured in four Europa League qualifying round matches and a Scottish Premiership game. Impressive!

2. Scott Arfield (Rangers)

Burnley were a surprise package in the Premier League last season as Sean Dyche’s men enjoyed an excellent term, securing a return to Europe in the process.

However, instead of staying put and fighting for a place in Dyche’s plans at Turf Moor for another season or two, Arfield saw out his contract and moved to Rangers. The Gers are also in Europe this season but regardless, the decision was rather surprising.

Naturally, the English top-flight would have been the best stage for a midfielder like Arfield to showcase his footballing talent.

3. Conor Goldson and Jamie Murphy (Rangers)

Rangers completed a double swoop on Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion as they signed centre-back Goldson and winger Murphy. Landing the 25-year-old Goldson could prove to be a shrewd signing by Gerrard as the defender is heading into his peak years.

Signing Murphy was also a smart move as the pacy winger will provide attacking flair and depth in the final third this season.
