Why Leeds United should avoid signing Oumar Niasse on loan

According to Football Insider (h/t The Sun), Everton have offered Leeds United the chance to sign out-of-favour striker Oumar Niasse on loan for the remainder of the season.

The West Yorkshire giants are in the market for a new striker after Eddie Nketiah was recalled by Arsenal earlier in the month and Everton are trying to use that to their advantage by offloading Niasse on loan before the January deadline (h/t The Sun).

The 29-year-old Senegalese international came on as a substitute for the last 16 minutes in Everton’s 1-1 draw against West Ham on Saturday but that was just his second first-team appearance of the season so far.

Niasse, who made his move to Goodison Park from Russian giants Lokomotiv Moscow back in the summer of 2016, has clocked up just 41 appearances for the Toffees across all competitions, scoring 9 times in the process.

The striker had previously been farmed out on loan by the Toffees on a couple of occasions, albeit his loan stints at Hull City and Cardiff City yielded contrasting returns.

Niasse scored 5 times in 19 appearances for the Tigers during the second half of the 2016-17 campaign but failed to get off the mark in 13 appearances last season as Cardiff failed to beat the drop in the Premier League. The Senegalese hitman’s contract at Goodison Park comes to an end this summer.

Meanwhile, Leeds United were beaten 1-0 by QPR in the Championship on Saturday, as the Whites slumped to a second consecutive league defeat following a 2-0 debacle against Sheffield Wednesday on January 11th.

Bamford, who has featured in all but one of Leeds United’s fixtures in the Championship so far this season, boasts of a decent tally of 10 goals but he has failed to find the net in any of his last five league appearances, with the Whites managing only a solitary win over that period. His barren patch in front of the goal is having a negative impact on the club’s campaign.

Verdict

To that end, though, Oumar Niasse doesn’t look like he could answer Leeds United’s prayers for a prolific striker, given that the 29-year-old hasn’t played a lot of senior football over the past couple of years.

Despite showing patches of promise at Everton and in his loan spell at Hull City, the Senegalese international hasn’t been anywhere close to convincing.

Niasse has never played in the Championship before and given his lacklustre returns, any deal taking him to Elland Road in January would be a massive gamble.
