As the youngster developed her talent, her family decided she would represent Japan, although she was brought up in the United States.
She also has an older sister, Mari, who is also a professional Tennis player.
Naomi Osaka turned pro in September 2013, even before turning 16, and quickly rose through the ranks.
Her first major breakthrough came when she made it to her first WTA Final in 2016, which saw her break into the top 100 and eventually the top 50 in the same year.
She then won her first Grand Slam in 2018 and then there was no looking back. She is currently ranked no.2 in the world.
Just few weeks after turning pro, Osaka was ranked no.406 in the world. However she was only 16 back then.
She broke into the top 250 for the first time just before the end of 2014 WTA season. And in the year 2015 she reached the highest ranking of her career back then, at no.144.
A break into the top 100 was achieved after she beat the then no.18 ranked Sara Errani in the Miami Open, after earning an entry as a wildcard. And, in the same year Osaka reached her first WTA final at the Pan Pacific Open. As a result Osaka broke into the top 50.
With 2017 being a year to forget, Naomi Osaka made giant strides in the year 2018, winning the US Open, which saw her enter the top 10 of the rankings. She then followed it up with a victory at the Australian Open, as he reached the helm just 5 years after turning pro.
2019 was a quite year after her Australian Open success, and so was 2020 for a large part. But she once again showed her resilience, as she won her second US Open title in 2020, following it up with a victory at the 2021 Australian Open.
She is currently ranked no. 2.

She then carried her form on to the 2019 Australian Open, showing her dominance on hard court. Osaka beat a resilient Petra Kvitova in the final to clinch her second Grand Slam title.
She didn’t have much success in the later part of 2019 nor in the major part of 2020, before she won the 2020 US Open. This time she beat Victoria Azarenka after being a set down.
