The 2013 quote that made Conor McGregor emotional before UFC 257

Conor McGregor got emotional at UFC 257 after a journalist read him a quote he said back in 2013

It is probably an ode to Conor McGregor’s narcissism that it took a quote from himself to make him the most emotional we have ever seen him get in public.

And we use narcissism in a good way here. His larger-than-life persona, cocky predisposition, and a way with words that remind you of the great Muhammad Ali, have all been a part of his brand.

They are what separates ‘The Notorious One’ from the rest of the athletes in his sport. But even the Conor McGregor

of 2013 would be surprised if he was told what he would go on to achieve in the next few years.

This is what happened in a press conference in the build-up to UFC 257 last month. A journalist brought up a quote that the Irishman said back when he was new to the promotion.

McGregor compares himself to the great artist Vincent van Gogh. In his own poetic words, he mentioned how he was lost his mind in the process of dedicating his life to MMA and how it would be worth it when he has everything he ever wanted to achieve.

“I’ve lost my mind on this game like Vincent Van Gogh dedicated his life to his art and he lost his mind in the process. That’s happened to me but f*** it. When that gold belt is wrapped around my waist, and my mother has a big mansion, my girlfriend has a big car, and my kids’ kids get everything they ever wanted, then it will pay. Then I will be happy I lost my mind. I’ll die a crazy old man.”

You could see that when the quote was read to him, he got a little emotional. And why wouldn’t he be?

Imagine hearing yourself from all those years back, describe everything you’ve ever wanted; everything that you have now achieved, and then some; it is natural that you would have goosebumps.

McGregor, when reacting to it before his fight against Dustin Poirier, mentioned how grateful he is to have this life that he now has.

“It’s been some ride and I have got it done and I’m up here, mad as a brush. I’ve been through it all my friend, and I appreciate that and it’s been a wild ride for me. It has not been times but what a life. I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t want it to be any other way.”

The former UFC double-champ went on to lose the rematch against ‘The Diamond’, but he is not done. He never is. A third fight is in the works and if you know McGregor, you know he will give it his all, even if he has nothing left to achieve.
