Why a new contract for Tariq Lamptey is a step in the right direction for Brighton

According to Daily Mail, Tariq Lamptey is set to snub interest from a host of clubs to sign a new contract with Brighton. Clubs such as Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and European champions Bayern Munich were also in the hunt for the former Chelsea starlet. Nonetheless, all those possibilities can be put to rest as Brighton are close to finalising a new deal for Lamptey.

Lamptey has been a revelation since joining from Chelsea

With limited chances of getting game time at Chelsea, Lamptey made the switch to Brighton on a permanent deal in January. He featured in 8 games for Brighton in the remainder of the 2019/20 season while starting 11 league games this season before getting injured. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The Hillingdon-born full-back, with his consistent displays, made himself a rare bright spark amidst the club’s poor start to the campaign. He has amassed a goal and 3 assists to show for his efforts.

Lamptey’s exploits on the south coast have also seen him nail down a regular starting role for the England U-21s. The Englishman looks like the real deal and one can only imagine how good he can get if guided the right way.

Extending Lamptey’s stay is the correct move

Lamptey has emerged as a top performer for Brighton in the current season. The 20-year-old has a bright future ahead of him. With so many factors in play, a new contract would ensure that the player remains committed to the club. In case there are suitors, they will have to pay a premium to secure his services.

The fact that he’s already playing week in week out in the Premier League at the tender age of 20 points to a bright future in the game. An attacking full-back, Lamptey has also caught the eye with his work rate at Brighton.

The youngster has excelled in both right-back and wing-back roles, covering every blade of grass down the flanks to contribute equally at both ends of the pitch.
