The UFC has made sweeping changes regarding the use of marijuana and cannabis from its fighters
The UFC finally decided to take cannabis or marijuana off the list of drugs that could get stars suspended.
Many stars have spoken out about this issue as some use the drug for its calming nature. Others also use it to help with injuries but the UFC hasn’t accepted this view for a while.
However, a release from the company confirmed that “positive tests over the threshold and decision limit for carboxy-THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis” would not be considered a violation of their anti-doping policy.
This is a welcome move from the UFC as many stars advocate the use of cannabis and its related products.
However, the state athletic commissions still have their rules and regulations about the same. Jeff Novitzky, the UFC VP of Athlete health and Performance went on to say:
“The bottom line is that in regard to marijuana, we care about what an athlete consumed the day of a fight, not days or weeks before a fight, which has often been the case in our historic positive THC cases.
“UFC Athletes will still be subject to marijuana rules under various Athletic Commission regulations, but we hope this is a start to a broader discussion and changes on this issue with that group.”
UFC stars pleased with the change
The move might have come a little late but many stars voiced their support to the decision taken by the UFC.
Matt Riddle, now with WWE, was one of the first to post about it. The former UFC star had a few wins taken off his record while he was caught using marijuana, and he even posted that his MMA record should be 10-3 now.
Niko Price, who was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after a positive cannabis test, confirmed that his suspension would not get overturned.
He was suspended for six months, handed a fine and the win was overturned into a no contest.
Lauren Murphy, for her part, was pleased with the news:
Angela Hill, another top female UFC star, also wanted the states to follow suit:
Chris Daukaus was also happy with the news:
