Lewis also had a promising football career in college and was on a full scholarship. However, he violated his probation for aggravated assault from his high school days and spent three and a half years in prison.
He was introduced to MMA by a friend soon after his release and he started training while he also worked as a two-truck driver.
The MMA world worked out well for him and the Black Beast is one of the toughest stars in the UFC.

His first fight in the UFC got him $14,000 thanks to a win. Defeating Francis Ngannou also earned him a massive $260,000 thanks to the win.

Lewis won his next three fights before making a debut at Bellator 46 in 2011. Lewis lost that battle but went on a six-fight unbeaten streak and got into the UFC.
His UFC debut took place in 2014 and he defeated Jack May. He then went 2-2 in the UFC before embarking on an incredible six-fight win streak again before losing to Mark Hunt.
The Black Beast had wins over Francis Ngannou and Alexander Volkov to get a title shot but lost it to Daniel Cormier.
He then lost to Junior dos Santos in 2019 but has been unbeaten since losing that battle.
Family and relationships
Derrick Lewis married his long-time girlfriend April Davis in Honolulu in 2017. The couple have two sons and a daughter.
Lewis comes from a huge family with seven siblings and is the second oldest. He was raised by a single mother in New Orleans and was involved in a lot of street fights while growing up.
Derrick Lewis had a big fight next as he was to take on Curtis Blaydes. This was the main event of the November 28 UFC card but it was cancelled after Blaydes tested positive for Covid-19.
The UFC could not find a replacement for Blaydes and Lewis will have to wait a bit before his next fight.
